After the chaotic holiday season, it is always nice to getaway for a weekend in the the quiet winter months. Even if its another city, a change of scenery always leaves you feeling refreshed when you come home. I decided to head to NYC last week to visit my sister, who lives in Brooklyn. It was the perfect weekend away filled with sightseeing, shopping and eating the best food! I wanted to share with you some of my favourite things to see, do and eat while in New York. I hope you enjoy and check out these places if you're planning on heading to NYC anytime soon!
What to do:
One of the things that we planned ahead of time and bought tickets for was a hockey game. Seeing the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden can be a little pricey, so we opted for (and still a great game!) a New York Islander game at the Barclays Center. We were staying in Brooklyn at my sister's apartment so it made the most sense but also the Brooklyn hockey games don't seem as touristy. In my opinion, they give you more of a local experience than Madison Square Garden. I would highly recommend checking out a hockey game if you're staying in Brooklyn!
If you're wondering what to do during the day, I mean the options are endless in NYC, but one of my favourite tourist attractions was checking out the amazing museums that Manhattan has to offer. I doubt you could get through them all in one day because there is so much to see. However my top three on our list was the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art. They are all so unique and unlike anything I've ever seen.
One thing that you HAVE to do is check out a comedy club! I have been to a few in NYC and found that the smallest and most discreet places usually put on the best shows. This past trip we went to Comedy Cellar which was amazing! Our show started at midnight, so make sure you're prepared to have a late night! They do have earlier shows if you buy your tickets in advance, however we decided to go last minute.
The Chelsea Market is also a great place to check out. It's full of eclectic stores, boutiques and amazing little pop up eateries. It's the perfect place to buy some tastey treats and walk around. The last must on my list of to-do's is the Brooklyn Brewery. To be honest, you don't even have to like beer to enjoy this place! They offer tours, which are really interesting to see how the beer is made and it's a lot of fun to grab a beer after from the brewery, definitely a must!
Where to eat:
One of my favourite places to get New York pizza, is the quaint little restaurant Emily Pizza. My boyfriend and I got the classic Margarita and in the past I have also had a white pizza called the Emily pizza (mozzarella, truffle, honey and pistachio), which is one of the best pizzas I have ever had. A MUST!
Some of the best little bakeries and cafes are right under the Plaza Hotel, who knew?! It is known as one of NYC's best hidden lunch spots in Midtown, located on the concourse level of the Plaza hotel. The Plaza Hall has a massive variety of cuisines and has some of the best food to grab a quick bite for lunch!
Lilia New York was one of the best meals I have ever had! It is totally worth the wait! I would recommend booking reservations as far in advance as possible, as we had to wait 3 hours. I went with my sister and my boyfriend. We shared some appetizers and pasta dishes. It was absolutely delicious! From the authentic and fresh Italian cuisine, to the amazing service, Lilia is a restaurant you HAVE to try while in New York. It is located in Brooklyn, however even if you're staying in Manhattan, it is worth the trek!
Where to drink:
There are endless spots to grab a drink in New York, but I thought I would share some of my top picks to help narrow down your search for the perfect cocktail if you're heading to NYC anytime soon. One of my favourite spots is Mothers Ruin bar. They have a great variety of cocktails and an awesome selection of beer. They also serve brunch and lunch, which we didn't get but it looked mouthwatering! They had things like grilled cheese dipped in french onion soup, talk about delectable! Definitely worth checking out even for a drink!
Another one of my favourite spots to check out for a drink is Sisters in Brooklyn. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but the cocktails and food is amazing. It's one of those places that you almost don't even want to eat your food because the presentation of it is so pretty. Instagram and food bloggers you will be in heaven! The cocktail that I ordered was unbelievably tastey and fresh. It was called the Second Earth cocktail, a combination of St.George gin, turmeric, fresh lemon and cappelletti. Amazing!
The last place to go for a cocktail, ranked 16th in the world's 50 best bars, is Dante bar. They are known for their famous Negroni cocktails and authentic Italian food served in an updated historic setting. Located in Little Italy this place is so unique and offers one of the best Negroni cocktails I have ever tried. A must!
