Travel: Jill's Trip To NYC

After the chaotic holiday season, it is always nice to getaway for a weekend in the the quiet winter months. Even if its another city, a change of scenery always leaves you feeling refreshed when you come home. I decided to head to NYC last week to visit my sister, who lives in Brooklyn. It was the perfect weekend away filled with sightseeing, shopping and eating the best food! I wanted to share with you some of my favourite things to see, do and eat while in New York. I hope you enjoy and check out these places if you're planning on heading to NYC anytime soon!

What to do:

One of the things that we planned ahead of time and bought tickets for was a hockey game. Seeing the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden can be a little pricey, so we opted for (and still a great game!) a New York Islander game at the Barclays Center. We were staying in Brooklyn at my sister's apartment so it made the most sense but also the Brooklyn hockey games don't seem as touristy. In my opinion, they give you more of a local experience than Madison Square Garden. I would highly recommend checking out a hockey game if you're staying in Brooklyn!

If you're wondering what to do during the day, I mean the options are endless in NYC, but one of my favourite tourist attractions was checking out the amazing museums that Manhattan has to offer. I doubt you could get through them all in one day because there is so much to see. However my top three on our list was the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art. They are all so unique and unlike anything I've ever seen.

One thing that you HAVE to do is check out a comedy club! I have been to a few in NYC and found that the smallest and most discreet places usually put on the best shows. This past trip we went to Comedy Cellar which was amazing! Our show started at midnight, so make sure you're prepared to have a late night! They do have earlier shows if you buy your tickets in advance, however we decided to go last minute.

The Chelsea Market is also a great place to check out. It's full of eclectic stores, boutiques and amazing little pop up eateries. It's the perfect place to buy some tastey treats and walk around. The last must on my list of to-do's is the Brooklyn Brewery. To be honest, you don't even have to like beer to enjoy this place! They offer tours, which are really interesting to see how the beer is made and it's a lot of fun to grab a beer after from the brewery, definitely a must!

Where to eat:

One of my favourite places to get New York pizza, is the quaint little restaurant Emily Pizza. My boyfriend and I got the classic Margarita and in the past I have also had a white pizza called the Emily pizza (mozzarella, truffle, honey and pistachio), which is one of the best pizzas I have ever had. A MUST!

Some of the best little bakeries and cafes are right under the Plaza Hotel, who knew?! It is known as one of NYC's best hidden lunch spots in Midtown, located on the concourse level of the Plaza hotel. The Plaza Hall has a massive variety of cuisines and has some of the best food to grab a quick bite for lunch!

Lilia New York was one of the best meals I have ever had! It is totally worth the wait! I would recommend booking reservations as far in advance as possible, as we had to wait 3 hours. I went with my sister and my boyfriend. We shared some appetizers and pasta dishes. It was absolutely delicious! From the authentic and fresh Italian cuisine, to the amazing service, Lilia is a restaurant you HAVE to try while in New York. It is located in Brooklyn, however even if you're staying in Manhattan, it is worth the trek!

Where to drink:

There are endless spots to grab a drink in New York, but I thought I would share some of my top picks to help narrow down your search for the perfect cocktail if you're heading to NYC anytime soon. One of my favourite spots is Mothers Ruin bar. They have a great variety of cocktails and an awesome selection of beer. They also serve brunch and lunch, which we didn't get but it looked mouthwatering! They had things like grilled cheese dipped in french onion soup, talk about delectable! Definitely worth checking out even for a drink!

Another one of my favourite spots to check out for a drink is Sisters in Brooklyn. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but the cocktails and food is amazing. It's one of those places that you almost don't even want to eat your food because the presentation of it is so pretty. Instagram and food bloggers you will be in heaven! The cocktail that I ordered was unbelievably tastey and fresh. It was called the Second Earth cocktail, a combination of St.George gin, turmeric, fresh lemon and cappelletti. Amazing!

The last place to go for a cocktail, ranked 16th in the world's 50 best bars, is Dante bar. They are known for their famous Negroni cocktails and authentic Italian food served in an updated historic setting. Located in Little Italy this place is so unique and offers one of the best Negroni cocktails I have ever tried. A must!

Q & A: Spring Fashion With Emily

On this week's blog, we thought we would do a Q&A with store owner Emily about her personal style and upcoming Spring trends. From how motherhood has changed her style, to the trends Emily is loving, we've asked it all! Hope you enjoy! XX.

1. Now that you're a mom, do you find your style has changed?

OMG yes. I'm much more casual now. I'm constantly covered in spit up, snot, food, milk... you get the picture. And I live on the floor, so I need to be comfortable. Arthur is a busy boy who likes to move. However, now whenever we go out for dinner or when I go to work I try to put in the extra effort. Although sometimes it's not the best effort if naps are cut short or I decided it was necessary to wash my hair. #momlife

2. What does your daily routine look like to get ready in the morning?

The Tasmanian devil. Basically I try to get as much done as possible while Arthur naps. It's rushed and its chaotic. I barely wear any make-up anymore but I do make sure to use both a facial mist and a deep moisturizer. My skin is SO dry and I'm starting to really worry about wrinkles and aging. Mascara is always a must when leaving the house.

3. If you could describe your style, what would it be?

My style is very much West Coat, California relaxed. I live in jeans, t-shirts and chunky knits.

4. What are 5 items you can't live without?

Dental floss, Acne Jensen Boots, Dermologica Active Moist Moisturizer, Benefit Brow powder and my apple watch!

5. What are your all-time favourite brands?

From our store I love Rails and Velvet. If I'm shopping elsewhere (the horror!) I love love love Acne and Equipment. Oh, and I live in AG denim.

6. Are there any Spring trends that you're dying to try?

We have a REALLY cool pair of Paige "mom jeans" coming this Spring that I literally can't wait to get my hands on. I'm also really digging the whole fanny pack trend.

7. What was your last big purchase you made?

A Celine Belt Tote bag. Well Jeff bought it for me. But it was on my wishlist for a long time.

8. Are you seeing any Spring trends that you're not into?

The bike short just seems horrendous. It's not flattering on ANYONE. Also I really can't get behind the resurgence of branded logos.

9. What was the best purchase you ever made?

A Nespresso machine. It saves my life in the morning. Fashion related I would say my Mackage leather bomber. I wear it ALL THE TIME.

10. What is your favourite city to shop in?

Los Angeles! It's basically just my favourite city. But I love the boutiques in Abbot Kinney. Plus you can eat your heart out in Beverly Hills.

11. What is one trend you wish you never tried?

Bangs and coloured jeans.

12. Do you find your style changes a lot from season to season?

For sure! I live in black and grey during the Winter. Come Spring and Summer I want to be in colour and fun prints.

13. Do you have any new workout studios you're wanting to try?

Now that we have a nanny I've able to hit up Soul Cycle a fair bit. I'm also dying to try Barry's Bootcamp!

14. We're seeing a lot of cropped flared jeans this Spring, what are your thoughts on this trend?

LOVE! As an awkward tall teem who unintentionally in cropped flares as an adolescent, I was so against it at first. But I've come around and am dying to get a pair!

15. What Spring collection are most excited to see in the store?

We've picked up Sanctuary this season and I can't wait to get it in! The Mackage Spring collection also looks amazing.

16. What is your favourite item of clothing?

Jeans Jeans Jeans!

17. What are you most excited for in the spring?

I can't wait to take Arthur for walks outside in High Park! We've been bottled up in our house for so long! It'll be so nice to just get outside and play!

18. Do you have any travel plans coming up?

Yes! I have a few trips planned. We're headed to California for the end of February. Then I'm visiting a girlfriend in Floria with my old roommates from Queens in March, my friend just had a baby and we're all itching to meet her! Finally in May I'm headed to Boston for a bachelorette trip to see the Blue Jays vs. Red Sox! Not bad for a new mom!

19. Do you have any favourite stores/boutiques to hit up while in California?

I love Principessa and Prism Boutique in Venice.

20. Last question! If you could trade wardrobes with one person for the day, who would it be and why?

The Salty Blonde of course! I love her laid back beach vibe she adds to all her outfits!

Recipes: Healthy Spring Dishes

Its always a nice adjustment when the days start becoming longer, the weather starts to get warmer (hopefully!) and we start to be more active and get outside. Everyone seems to be a lot more motivated in the spring and summer to eat healthier and exercise more frequently. It's so easy to fall into a winter routine of heavier foods and instead of hitting the gym in the morning before work, reaching for that snooze button and stay nestled in bed. We are all guilty of blowing off that late night spin class after work, instead getting in your sweats and binge watching your favourite Netflix series. Its a nice change to switch up your winter menu for some light, fresh, and healthy meals ideas. We've shared some of our favourite spring recipes that will help get you on the right track as the warmer weather is just around the corner!

Lisa Bryan's Lemon Garlic Zucchini Pasta

If you want something light and fresh to make for your next dinner party, but don't want a heavy pasta dish, a great substitute is zucchini noodles. They're super easy, light, healthy and you can be creative and add so many different ingredients! You can buy pre-cut noodles from Whole Foods or Sobeys (or any grocery store) but if you have a Zucchini spiralizer, it takes no time at all! You can add grilled chicken, other veggies and cheese (we love parmesan) to make it similar to a pasta dish. Its perfect for a big group of people, as you can make a large portion. It's a great alternative if you are trying to eat lighter and reduce your carb intake. We also love this dish with grilled shrimp, for a light spring dinner!

  • 4 medium zucchinis
  • 1.5 lb of raw shrimp (peeled)
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 lemon, juice and zest
  • 1/4 cup of white wine (or chicken broth)
  • 1/3 of chopped parsley
  • pinch of red pepper flake
  • pinch of salt and pepper

1. Wash and cut the ends of the zucchini off and put through your spiralizer.

2. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and sprinkle salt and pepper. Cook for about a minute. Don't flip or stir the shrimp, making the bottom of the shrimp a little crispy.

3. Add in the chopped garlic and stir in with the shrimp for about a minute. Remove shrimp from the pan and place onto a plate.

4. Add the butter, lemon juice and zest. Add the white wine and bring to a simmer for about 2-3 minutes. Keep stirring.

5. Stir in parsley, add in zucchini noodles for about 30 seconds. Add the shrimp and stir for about a minute. Serve right away.

Goop's Mediterranean Cauliflower Pizza

It's pretty apparent that we are huge Goop fans, as we've shared a lot of the recipes and have even featured Gwyneth's style as one of our fashion icons. We love how easy and fresh all the recipes are and not to mention super healthy! It can be difficult and exhausting always thinking of what to make for dinner. Sometimes it's hard to brainstorm ideas that are easy and healthy after a long day of work. We find that the Goop page is our go-to source for quick, easy, AND healthy recipes for those tiring Wednesday nights that dinner doesn't seem plausible. I mean not only is Gwyneth Paltrow stylish but she credits her glowing complexion and fit physique to her goop diet. Sign us up! One of the recipes that stood out to us is their cauliflower pizza. Not only does it look amazing but the the recipe seems straightforward and super healthy.

For the cauliflower base:

  • 1(600 g/ 1 pound 5 ounce) cauliflower
  • 1/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup almond meal
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

For the pizza sauce:

  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 small tomatoes, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or dried basil
  • Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the toppings:

  • 1/2 roasted red capsicum (bell pepper), peeled, seeded and sliced
  • 4 marinated artichoke halves, thickly sliced
  • 150 g (5 1/2 ounces) marinated goat's cheese, broken into lumps
  • 1/2 cup pitted kalamata olives
  • 1 large handful rocket leaves (arugula)
  • 1 tablespoon pine nuts, lightly toasted
  • extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

1. Place baking sheet in the over and preheat your oven to 220 C (430 F). Line a pizza tray approx. 26 cm with baking paper.

2. Bring a large saucepan filled with water to a boil. Take cheesecloth or a clean dish towel and line a colander.

Place the cauliflower in a food processor and blend until the cauliflower is finely chopped into tiny grains.

4. Cool the cauliflower for about 1 minute (so it still has a bit of crunch). Pour the cooked cauliflower into the prepped colander and set aside to cool and drain.

5. To make the pizza sauce, heat the oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook the garlic until its soft. Add the tomatoes, herbs and cook for roughly 15 minutes. Cook the tomatoes until they are soft and the liquid has reduced, making a thick sauce. Take the sauce and puree and add a pinch of salt and pepper.

6. Bundle the cauliflower up in the cheesecloth or towel and squeeze out any remaining water.

7. To prepare the base, take the blended cauliflower and other ingredients and mix in a bowl. Spoon the mixture into the centre of the pizza tray and flatten to make an even base. Place the pizza tray onto the preheated baking tray. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the cauliflower turns golden brown.

8. Take the tomato sauce and spread over the crispy base. Take the roasted pepper, artichoke, goat's cheese, olives and place them on the sauce. Bake for another 10 mines, until the cheese turns brownish.

10. Take out of the oven. Sprinkle some arugula over top with pine nuts. Drizzle with olive oil.

11. Let it cool for about 10 minutes. Slice, serve and enjoy!!

Lauren Conrad's Lettuce-Wrapped Tacos

Not only is Lauren Conrad one of our favourite bloggers and fashionistas but she also is a great chef! What can't this girl do?! It's no secret we are obsessed with any type of Mexican cuisine. We would eat tacos every night if we could! When Conrad posted this recipe for her version of "healthy" tacos we were totally intrigued and tried this recipe! Its the perfect meal for when the weather is warm and all we want is light and easy recipes.

  • 1 head of iceberg lettuce
  • 1 raw boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 orange bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 fresh lime juice for flavour
  • Cotija cheese

1. Marinate chicken (whichever sauce you like!) and cook chicken either on the barbecue, stovetop, or in a conventional oven. Lauren Conrad put hers in the oven on a foil-lined baking sheet at 450 degrees, for 20 minutes.

2. When chicken is fully cooked (center is opaque), cut each breast into thin slices, about 1/2 inch thick.

3. Place strips of chicken on your bed of lettuce and top with slice bell peppers and avocados (or any veggies you like!).

4. Add a squirt of lime juice for some extra zing, and sprinkle crumbled cotija cheese.  Enjoy!!

Chrissy Teigen's Summer Spring Rolls

From her exceptional style, to her hilarious tweets, Chrissy Teigen seems to always get it right, even in the kitchen! When her cook book Cravings, was published in 2016, we couldn't help but try out the majority of her mouthwatering dishes. I mean they are all so tasty! One of the recipes that stood out to us was her Summer spring rolls. Not only are they fresh, light and healthy for the spring/summer but they are super easy! Bonus!

  • 8 medium sized shrimp
  • 4-6 red leaf lettuce leaves
  • 1 ounce of rice noodles
  • 8 large or 16 small basil leaves
  • 8 large or 16 small mint leaves
  • 1 medium carrot (cut into 3 inch long strips)
  • 1 avocado thinly sliced
  • 8 rice papers
  • Thai sweet chili sauce for serving

1. Slice the lettuce, carrots and avocado all in thin slices.

2. Fill a pot up of water and bring to a boil. Place noodles in the pot and cook until they are completely soft. Drain noodles.

3. Heat up a saucepan and cook shrimp until they are pink.

4. Take a bowl of warm water and dip rice paper in the bowl until soft and easy to wrap. Put the rice paper on a clean cloth and start adding in your lettuce, carrot, pepper, avocado and rice noodles. Wrap the ingredients up in the rice paper. Make sure they are tight!

5. Cut in half and serve! You can choose any type of dipping sauce (peanut, sweet chili etc.).

6. Enjoy!

Style Profile: The Salty Blonde

It's no surprise that one of our biggest style crushes is fashion blogger, the Salty Blonde. We are obsessed with her laid-back beach style that has a twist. From a tee and jeans, to her signature floral maxi dresses, Halley is pure perfection! This Oahu based fashionista is always donning the latest trends and hot brands. She often wears brands that we carry here at V.O.C and even some of the exact same pieces! We love how she typically pairs a higher priced piece, such as a silk Rails blouse, with Van sneakers and vintage jeans, making her outfit have the perfect amount of edge. Her favourites brands include Amuse Society, Rails and Faithful. We've chosen some of our favourite looks from the Salty Blonde's Instagram account, giving you some outfit inspiration for different occasions and this upcoming spring season. From her cool airport style, to a day in city, she rocks every look! We hope you enjoy! XX.

Who is Halley Elefante?

Born in New York, now living in Oahu, Halley started her Instagram account to document her own personal style. While bartending in NYC, the Salty Blonde realized that there was newfound success for influencers documenting their daily outfits and collaborating with brands.

After moving to Hawaii, Halley found a niche in style blogging, mixing her east coast wardrobe with her new laid-back beach style, creating a unique look. A lot of her inspiration comes from her mother, replicating a lot of 70's, 80's and 90's looks. The Salty Blonde has done an excellent job in representing and showcasing brands through her Instagram account, as she tags each piece she is wearing, making those items available to followers. This allows people to recreate that look with their own personal touch and is accessible now for so many through Instagram. Her Instagram account is the perfect example of that, giving followers inspiration on how to style pieces through her own photos.

The Salty Blonde started posting photos (all her photos are taken by her fiancee!) and tagging brands in the pictures of the clothes she's wearing in hopes of getting reposted. Her Instagram completely took off and she gained followers quickly. Elefante credits her unique captions as being more "real" than most Instagram accounts. We are completely obsessed with every single one of her looks, always capturing vintage, retro and bohemian vibes all in one. The Salty Blonde can do no wrong!

Favourites Looks

One of the things that we absolutely love about the Salty Blonde's style is how she isn't afraid of pairing different prints and textures. We love that she paired a multicoloured knit sweater with pinstripe dress pants. It might seem that these two items would clash, however she totally makes it work! Typically you would want to pair trouser pants with a blouse or something that is equally dressy, however she dresses down these pants with an oversized knit. Who knew?! She doesn't follow rules when it comes to fashion and pairs items together that you wouldn't think of, all still while executing the perfect laid-back look.

Dressed Up

We love when the Salty Blonde posts a photo in a dressier look because she always is wearing the prettiest floral prints! She gravitates towards vintage-floral looking prints (super popular this spring!), often in maxi length styles. She wears flowy dresses, reflecting her laid-back and functional style. When wearing maxi dresses, we often think its a bit too dressy for a day to day look, however she is pictured wearing a maxis with with Van sneakers while at beach front pub. Thats the great thing about her fashion sense, she mixes different looks and doesn't stick to any rules.

Beach Look

The Salty Blonde is the ultimate beach queen! Every beach look she posts, she owns! Whether its denim cut-offs and a printed blouse or a maxi skirt and tank, her style is effortless and chic. Our favourite beach look is her Amuse Society overalls (hint we may be seeing this adorable jumper in store soon), as they are cool, casual and perfect to throw over a bikini. Giving us all the vintage feels!

Airport Style

Who says you can't be stylish while travelling?! Although waiting for those late night red-eye flights isn't the most glamorous of times, there is no rule that says you can't look cute while doing it! The Salty Blonde often layers while travelling which is smart because planes can be freezing, however it still looks stylish. Donning fun joggers, such as these fringe Amuse Society pants pictured below, a denim jacket and a few layers underneath is the perfect cool and casual style for hopping on and off the plane. Another airport style that we loved from the Salty Blonde is when she sported a classic wool coat (the camel one pictured below) styled with sneakers and a tee. Styling down a wool coat with casual pieces, allows for the coat to tie the whole outfit together and dress up the look.

City Style

It's rare that we see the Salty Blonde in a city landscape, usually her photos are at the beach. We love the slight transition in style from beach to city that we see in her photos. She wears more solids in the city, transitioning from her signature bohemian beach prints. However, she still adds her casual touch to every outfit.  Her style never strays too far from her beachy roots. Whether she is throwing an oversized denim jacket over dress pants, a fringe bag over a sleek ensemble, the Salty Blonde always gets it right. We are completely obsessed with her laid-back beach style!

Style Watch: Spring 2018 Trends

It's always such an exciting time of the year when one season starts to come to an end and trends for the next start to appear. Not only has this winter been extremely cold but we're at that point in the season to recycle our heavy parkas and winter boots and slip into slides, linens and all those fresh spring colours! We thought it seemed like a great time to share our favourite spring 2018 trends with you, as January can be a little blue. We hope you enjoy our top trend picks and get some inspiration for some fun and fresh spring fashion! XX

It's always fun trying new denim every season! We find a few pairs of trendy denim can completely alter your wardrobe to be on trend with the hottest looks that season. With 90's and 00's throwbacks dominating the fashion conversation right now, we can't help but love the denim spring trends as they are bringing all those styles back! Some of our favourites include a straight leg, frayed hem and kick flare. With just a stylish pair of jeans, you can pair something as plain as a white tee with them and still be right on trend for that season! Talk about effortless!

Straight Leg Jeans

Straight leg jeans have been a trend for a few seasons now, however this spring that seems to be all we are seeing! A slim or straight leg is the perfect "it" denim to invest in this spring/summer.  From slides, to sneakers, a straight leg adds a casual and vintage look to every outfit. Some of our favourite straight leg or slim styles are from AG and Levi's. We love the Isabelle style from AG and the Wedgie jean from Levi's. Spoiler alert! V.O.C will be getting on board with these styles for spring.... stay tuned!

Frayed Hem

We've been seeing a lot of raw detailing on denim for the past few seasons, however this spring a heavy destructed hem is coming in hot! We're talking a super frayed hem, to even some slight fringe. Its such a fun take on an unfinished hem, making these jeans more of a statement piece and giving an edge to your outfit. They are the perfect jeans with slide sandals, mules and block heels.

Kick Flare Denim

We can't get enough of the trending cropped kick flare jean right now for spring! We love how V.O.C's very own denim brand, AG, was the first to introduce the cropped flare jeans with their collaboration with Alexa Chung. They are giving us all the 90's feels! From mules, to block heels, cropped flared jeans are ultra flattering, as they elongate your legs! Yes please!  We find the best length to buy in this hot trend in right above your ankle, allowing the cropped look to be in full effect. The the high-rise fit of denim isn't going anywhere, especially with cropped denim. A light wash cropped kick flare jean looks amazing with a delicate blouse tucked in at the front to show off your shape! This is definitely a trend we are on board with this spring!

It's all about the ice cream flavours this spring! From those pretty baby blues, to blush tones, pastels are this spring's hottest colours! We love the freshness that comes along with a great pastel colour. A baby pink or blue looks so fresh and feminine when paired with white jeans. You can't go wrong with these soft colours this spring!

Gingham was trending last spring/summer and is still a super hot trend this season and we're still absolutely obsessed! It doesn't get more fresh and playful than a gingham print piece for the summer! We find pairing solids with this print is the perfect way to allow the fun print to be the main focus of your outfit. We love a cute little gingham mini dress styled with a denim jacket and mules, channeling our inner Brigette Bardot!

Vintage-looking Floral

We're complete suckers for a a great floral print. Florals for spring? Groundbreaking! Soft, vintage-inspired florals are all the rage this spring. We love this vintage look paired with high-waisted kick flare jeans. Talk about throwing it back with vintage 70's vibes! Another look we can't get enough of with vintage florals, is when a delicate floral blouse, such as our Velvet Kandee blouse, with our AG Isabelle jeans. Its a great mix of delicate and edgy.

All Things Red

One of the hottest colours this spring season, along with pastels, is a bold fiery red. We love this pop of colour, as it adds a a vibrant punch to any outfit. Its not that candy apple red that has been popular in past seasons, rather a hue that is between red and orange. Pantone named this colour "cherry tomato" as part of the trending colours for spring 2018. We love red paired with light vintage looking denim and gold accessories. We are totally crushing on this fierce colour for spring 2018! Keep an eye out for these hot trends to make their way to V.O.C soon! (You might even see these cute pieces from Amuse Society below in store soon!)

STYLE TIPS: Top Wardrobe Essentials

As a new season is approaching (we can't wait!), sometimes its hard to decipher what you need and want as new spring trends are becoming more apparent. It is hard to resist buying items that don't necessarily serve as functional pieces in our wardrobe, as some clothes are just too fun to pass up (guilty!). We have found that if you start with buying some great staples for your closet this helps create a base to build upon. Making it's so much easier to create different looks, tie outfits together and transition from season to season. We have made a list of essential pieces that are a must in every girl's wardrobe, for any season. Acting as a staple, base, or adding a chic flare, these items are guaranteed to never go out of style! We hope you enjoy! XX

The Classic White Tee

A white t-shirt might not be the most exciting spring investment but believe us, it is worth adding to your wardrobe. A classic crisp white t-shirt that has a great neckline (we are a sucker for a good scoop), is a staple that will tie any outfit together, go with anything and double as the ultimate layering piece. Don't get us wrong we love a good print. However, its nice to rock a simple white tee and a great pair of denim from time to time. There is nothing fresher than a white t-shirt, a classic blue pair of jeans and sneakers in the spring! The options are endless with a white t-shirt. For instance, pair it with vintage high-waisted Levi's and gold accessories. You instantly have a casual, yet chic outfit. Or throw a leather jacket over and black jeans for a night out. One of our favourite white t-shirts is the Velvet Kira. Not only is the quality amazing, which is important because you will be wearing this gem A LOT, but the cut is universally flattering. No wonder we can't keep this tee in stock! Take our advice and buy yourself a crisp white tee for the spring, trust us you will never look back!

Black or Dark Denim

One of the staple pieces that we find ourselves wearing at least 2-3 times per week is a great pair of black or dark denim. They go with anything and everything! Not only are dark washes and black jeans super slimming but they can be styled for a larger range of events compared to other washes. Depending on where you work or what your office dress code is, a pair of black jeans and a blouse can be your work uniform.  They are so easy to style and modify for any occasion. You can wear them to the office, dress them down for the perfect weekend attire or for a night out. One of the best things about a great pair of black or dark denim is the versatility that comes with them, making them essential in your wardrobe!

Denim Shirt

One of our absolute favourite pieces in our wardrobe and has been for years is a classic denim shirt. Nothing is more essential than this trusty staple! Two of our favourite brands that we absolutely love is Bella Dahl and Rails. A denim shirt can be worn on those casual Sundays with blue jeans (we love a good Canadian tuxedo!), black skinny jeans while going out for dinner with friends, or open with a camisole. The list goes on and on! A classic denim button down is also perfect for layering with a cardigan or crewneck over top in the cooler seasons. This essential item is always on trend, versatile, and comfortable, solidifying its place on the wardrobe essential list!

Black Blouse

A classic blouse can go a long way in your wardrobe. We tend to always have a classic blouse on hand in a neutral colour and style, allowing it to be paired with endless items in your closet. One of our favourite staple blouses right now is our new Velvet Pila blouse. One of the features that we love about the Pila blouse is the neckline. It has a tuxedo style collar, making the blouse look super sophisticated and easily dressed up. yet  A classic black blouse can be styled so many ways. We find we are always looking for a simple blouse to wear under our favourite leather bomber, denim jacket or with our distressed denim. There isn't one item of clothing the Pila blouse from Velvet doesn't compliment!

Statement Accessory Piece

It is always worth it to have one statement accessory in your closet to add a little something to a simple outfit. Two of our favourite go-to pieces that can transform your outfit from boring to chic is the Brave leather belt (we LOVE the Omes or Hiro) or the Amarilo Alexa Coin Choker. These are two pieces that we find instantly add a chic flare to any outfit. Style the Omes belt with a white t-shirt (the Velvet Kira obviously!) and jeans. It doesn't get much easier than adding only one item to take your outfit from simple to chic! (Kendall Jenner photographed wear our Brave Jo-beth in black.)

Slip On Running Shoes

A pair of slip-on sneakers are crucial! We love a classic black pair of sneakers with no laces. They allow you to dress up a simple tee and jeans, or dress down a blouse or dress. One of the best things about a pair of classic sneakers is how easy and comfortable they are to wear. From running errands or heading out for dinner, you won't ever to worry about comfort. One of our favourites pairs, even owned by a few of the V.O.C girls, is the Vince slip-on sneakers. They are an easy staple that instantly adds a dose of chicness to every outfit.

 Leather Jacket

We kept the best for last! One of favourite year-round wardrobe essentials is a great leather jacket. Trust us, there isn't an outfit a leather jacket doesn't looking amazing with! Wearable in any season, a leather jacket is worth the price, as it is a classic and timeless piece that you will wear year after year. Throw over a tee and jeans with sneakers or a feminine dress to add some edge to a girly piece. This is an investment piece you will thank us for! One of our absolute favourite leather jackets that never goes out of the style is the Mackage Baya. Both of our top style crushes are pictured below wearing the Mackage Baya. Its fate!

Q&A: 20 questions with Terri

With a new addition to the V.O.C team, we thought it would be a great opportunity to post a Q&A blog to help you get to know our newest associate Terri a little better if you haven't already met her. From her cool yet polished style, to her friendly demeanour, Terri is the perfect addition to V.O.C! Check out Terri's answers to this in-depth Q&A. From guilty pleasures, to her favourite style icons, we've asked it all! Hope you enjoy XX.

1. Where are you from and what is your role here at the store? How did you hear about V.O.C?

I was born in Montreal and moved to Oakville when I was 10. I met my husband in Oakville when I was in university, studying Commerce at McMaster. I've lived in Oakville for the past 20+ years and have always been familiar with the downtown area. I have always loved shopping at the boutiques on Lakeshore. I started shopping here years ago and fell in love with all the brands that V.O.C carries. I am currently working as a part-time sales associate. I love helping customers find pieces they love and they feel great in! By far the best part of the job!

2. What was your very first job?

My first job ever was a cashier at Loblaws, in Oakville! It used be at Dundas and Trafalgar. I worked there a few times a week, all throughout high school and university.

3. If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

It would definitely be something that would involve a lot of travelling. I would love to see so many different parts of the world. It would be amazing to experience different cultures, with emphasis on the food and fashion in each! I think if I could pick any job it would be in the field of fashion!

4. What are your favourite brands and how best would you describe your personal style? Who are your style icons?

I am denim obsessed! I absolutely love Levi's and Paige jeans. I recently just purchased the Paige Hoxton Bali jeans and I am in LOVE with them. I recently bought the Levi's 501 taper and they are a great jean for the weekend while I'm running around with my kids! I wear them at least 3 times a week. I also really love Bella Dahl, I find myself gravitating towards a lot of their tops as they are super unique and great quality.

Hmmm this is a hard one! I've never really tried to categorize my style into one particular look because to be honest it's always changing. I love mixing feminine pieces with more laid back casual items. Such as ripped Levi's boyfriend jeans with a delicate blouse. I would say that my style is casual with a feminine and bohemian flare.

This question is so hard! I have so many style icons! If I had to choose,  Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz are my top 3 style crushes! I love their fun and casual style. It's never over the top but still super trendy.

5. What is your favourite type of cuisine?

Another hard question! My background is Italian, so my comfort food is Italian. I love a great homemade eggplant parmesan or lasagna. I also love exploring other types of food. Such as Japanese, Indian and greek. I love Piazza Bistro in the Town Square in Oakville. I find their Italian food so fresh and authentic.

6. What is your fitness routine?

I love being active, it helps keep my mind and body feeling well! I work out at the One Health Club here in Oakville (located on Upper Middle Road) about 3x a week or as much as I can depending on my schedule. My gym workouts vary from group classes, such as body pump or spinning to yoga. I recently tried this class called "pound-drum". It is a cardio class using weighted drumsticks to help sculpt while burning a ton of calories! I also love being active with the kids, whether it be skating, walking or hiking! Exercising has always been a big part of my lifestyle, even when I was pregnant with both my kids.

7. Would you say you are a morning person or a night owl?

I am definitely NOT a morning person! I like my quiet time during the morning and would rather not talk to anyone (including my husband and kids... which is tough) until after I've had my morning coffee. After that I am good to go! I am always busy at night thinking of "one more thing I should do before I go to bed!" I mentally make lists of what events I have coming up and what the next day holds... sometimes finding it hard to fall asleep- so definitely a night owl!

8. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Dishonest people. I am a very honest person and I would rather tell it like it is, than tell someone a lie. I think this makes you a more genuine and open person.

9. What show are you currently into right now?

I love the show This is Us! It's such a great show about family and life. It's so addictive too. I watched the first series on Netflix and I am currently watching second season on TV right now. Every episode is amazing and I seriously cry at almost every one!

10. What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Ohh this is a tough one! I love to vacation and there are so many kinds of vacation! I love a great 'relaxing' vacay on the beach - like Jamaica or in Florida at our family home. I recently went to Italy with the whole family and LOVED being immersed in the culture, learning about the history, people and food!

11. What is the coolest place you have ever been to?

Cordoba in Spain! It's an amazing little town in the south of Spain that is all enclosed by ancient city walls! You can walk the entire town on cobble stone roads with no cars. The most incredible part of this town is the Mezquita - the largest mosque in the world! It started off as a cathedral and then it was transformed into a mosque. It now remains a cathedral-mosque with beautiful monuments and art from 2 diverse cultures. It was amazing to witness all the history and changes that have been made over time!

12. What are 3 beauty products you can't live without?

I absolutely love Eminence organic face products! Everything from their cleansers, to moisturizers and masques. Secondly, I love MAC under eye concealer. It works so well and doesn't look to thick under your eyes. It's perfect if you didn't get much sleep the night before! The last beauty product I can't live without is the ROC lip gloss. Its perfect for adding some shine to your lips but also keeping them hydrated during these cold winter months!

13. What is your favourite thing to do in your down time/ when you're not working?

I love to just spend time at home hanging out with my kids and doing something active. Right now we love going outdoor skating or going tobogganing. Its awesome that they are now at an age where they enjoy activities and it can be a fun family activity. Another one of my favourite things to do in my spare time is a ladies night! Going out for dinner or drinks with my girlfriends is always so much fun and a nice break from my chaotic weeks!

14. What is your guilty pleasure?

This is an easy question! Salty! Anything and everything salty! Especially at night, which is terrible. Don't give me chips or I will eat the whole bag!

15. What is the best purchase you ever made?

My leather Mackage jacket! I bought it over 5 years ago and still love it! I wear it all the time. It literally goes with everything. I will wear with a tee, jeans and sneakers. Or I throw it over a dress and heels for a night out. Love!

16. What is one trend you are loving right now and dying to try?

This is tough because there are so many cute trends coming out for spring! I am really into the cropped flare jeans for spring. I saw them last spring and thought they wouldn't work on me. However, this season there is so many different lengths and washes that I love, such as some light wash distressed styles that I've seen!

17. What is one trend you wish you never tried/ or don't like?

Bangs. I tried bangs a few times in my life and it was horrible! They were so hard to maintain and my hair totally did not cooperate!

18. What are you most excited for in Spring?

Warm weather! I feel like I'm more excited than most years for Spring because of this frigid cold spell we've had the past few weeks. It has really made me appreciate the warmer weather! I am also really excited for amazing new spring fashion. I want to try more fun and flirty blouses. I love the look of a cropped feminine blouse with high waisted jeans. Super cute! I also love the look of a great spring floral dress with ankle booties!

19. What can't you leave the house without?

My Swell water bottle filled with cold water! I really try and drink water all day long to hydrate and counteract all the coffee!

20. What is your go-to drink?

I am really loving cold-pressed juices right now! They are so great to help boost your immune system, perfect for this time of year, and to add some of those extra veggies that you might miss throughout the day. I love Green Press, just a few blocks down from V.O.C. My go-to picks there are the carrot or beet juice. If I feel like I might be coming down with something, I always grab a ginger shot. It seems to always do the trick!

Travel: Winter Getaway Spots

As the the busy holiday season comes to an end and the winter blues are in full affect, it's always nice to escape the cold for some much needed rest and relaxation in the sun. The past few weeks have been absolutely freezing and its only going to get colder this weekend! We included our favourite local winter getaway spot. However we've included more warmer destinations because I'm sure we are all dreaming of the hot sun right now!  We have listed places we are dying to go to and ones that we've already visited. Hope you enjoy XX.

Amanda's top picks

South Beach

If you're planning a weekend getaway with your girlfriends or significant other, we would highly recommend South Beach! We probably would skip this spot if you're looking for a family friendly vacay. The South Beach beach strip is full of unique boutique hotels, cool bars and some of the best shopping! One of our favourite things about South Beach is that there is still the atmosphere of a beach holiday, however you can still experience the shopping and restaurants of a city. Talk about the best of both worlds! Its a great place to stay for a long weekend to enjoy the weather, nightlife and amazing food.

Some of our favourite restaurants to check out  is Joe's Stone Crab for authentic seafood. Cibo Wine Bar (also located in Toronto) for awesome Italian food, and Baoli Miami for the best fresh sushi and fun atmosphere.

It has always been on our list to checkout the Grand Canyon. From the views, to the fun excursions, Arizona is a destination that is completely different from the typical beach holiday. It has amazing warm weather, especially in the winter, unbelievable views and fun excursions for every age group!

Sedona, surrounded by red-rock buttes, looks absolutely beautiful and different from any other vacation destination we've been to. One of the hotel/spas we are dying to stay at is the L'Auberge de Sedona. From the views, to the individual cottage-like villas, this hotel looks amazing! The desert atmosphere is completely different from any other warm climate vacation, trading the beach for red-rock buttes! Arizona offers a lot of excursions, perfect for any getaway occasion. A girls trip, couples getaway or a fun family vacation, there are so many activities offered, you won't have to worry about being bored when you're not relaxing by the hotel pool. Our top excursions that we are dying to do is the jeep and helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon.

Jill's top Picks

Venice Beach and Santa Monica

One of the places that we are dying to go to is Santa Monica and Venice Beach, seeing as it is one of the most iconic vacation spots to hit up when heading to California! From the shopping, to the beaches, restaurants and nightlife, it absolutely fits the criteria for the ultimate laid back beach vacation! We've listed a few of the coolest restaurants, bars and boutiques we're dying to check out (as recommended by V.O.C owner, Emily)! Be prepared, you will never want to leave! Santa Monica:

Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain

If you're a winter person or find it hard to get away for a longer amount of time, then the Scandinave Spa at Blue Mountain is the perfect weekend or even day getaway for you! Talk about a perfect winter escape! If you can't get away for a weekend, it's still worth the drive to spend an entire day full of pampering and enjoying the Scandinavian outdoor baths. Only a few hours of driving north and you can escape for a day of relaxation, while enjoying the winter season. Sounds ideal! If you do have the time and can manage to get away for more than a day, there are a lot of great hotels (Westin Trillium House Blue Mountain) to turn this day trip into a winter weekend getaway!

2018: Goals For The New Year

One of the great things about January is being able to start fresh and kick those old habits to the curb and add in some new ones. It is always a great feeling to dive right into any new workout regimen, hobby you wanted to pick up, winter vacations you want to plan or just make some overall goals for the year. It is nice to have the holidays to wind down and really focus on as a new year begins. We hope you enjoy XX.

With January being one of the coldest months of the year, it is always a challenge getting yourself to the gym when you could be cozy on the couch watching a movie. However, working out is such a great outlet for relieving stress and helping with a healthy sleep pattern. It takes roughly two weeks to make something a habit. Those first two weeks of dragging your butt to the gym might be painful, but after a couple of weeks you will be craving that exercise. We know that sounds crazy! It's common to think that working out automatically means a sweat session at a crowded gym on the treadmill, which can get pretty boring after only a couple of gym sessions. However, there are so many fun workouts that really make exercising not horrible, even enjoyable! We have included some of our favourite workouts and studios we are dying to try below!

With multiple studios in the Toronto area, one in Bronte and locations opening soon, this global gym, originating in Australia, is one of our favourite HIT workouts. With strength training mixed with the cardio intervals, workouts at F45 are proven to be effective. With limited space in each class and an instructor, you will be shown how to do each exercise properly, in order to see the best results. With smaller workout classes, sorry to say, but there is no slacking in these classes! We highly recommend this studio if you are looking to kick your workout into high gear in the new year, or start a high intensity workout routine!

Surfset Fitness

This is unique workout studio is located downtown Toronto and focuses on a workout, based solely on a surfboard. This unconventional exercise is a lot harder than it looks, as the board you are doing the workout on is placed on three stability balls. This works both your supporting muscle groups and your major ones. Talk about a hard workout! It may sound like a relaxing workout but this is harder than it looks!

PYC Hot Yoga

One of our favourite workouts, especially in those cold winter months is hot yoga. Its a perfect mixture of relaxation and a workout. We find it a great for decreasing stress, toning and flexibility. Hot yoga is amazing for sweating out all those holiday treats! One of our favourite studios here at V.O.C is Power Yoga Canada. From its central location, friendly staff and amazing studio, its hard not to get addicted to this place instantly! Dropping by a night class on your way home for work is a great way to unwind after a long day at work. Two of our favourite classes at PYC is the Jam class, which has music playing throughout the entire class. From top 40, to Britney, to Eminem, this class is super fun! Another one of our favourite classes to checkout is the candle lit Deep Flow class. This class is full of movement as there are few breaks taken (a great arm movement!). We highly recommend PYC for one of our favourite winter workouts!

Take Time For Yourself

We're all guilty of of forgetting to take time for ourselves with everyones busy schedule. Taking twenty minutes at the end of each day just to slow down and actually relax can make all the difference. Even if that means just taking a relaxing bath or doing a face mask. It's easy to get caught up in your busy day-to-day schedule and not finish or even start the things you've been eager to do. Here is a list that can help you organize all the things YOU want to do or continue doing in the new year. You can write this list down and use it as a reminder throughout the year!

Reading: What do you want to read more of? (books, magazines, blogs, newspaper)

Pampering: What is one activity you can do once a week to pamper yourself? (get your nails done, give yourself a manicure, do a face mask, take a bubble bath)

Hobby: What is a hobby/ activity you have started but never got the chance to finish?

Habit: What is a bad habit you want to break?

Food: What is a type of cuisine you want to eat more of or even try?

Fashion: What is a trend you are dying to try or even an item of clothing you want to start wearing more?

Make Healthier Choices

Drink Lots of Water

As the frigid winter months are officially upon as, that means the dry skin season has started. As the air temperature drops, the air becomes dryer and our bodies receive less moisture. Therefore making us lather on more moisturizer on a daily basis! Drinking a ton a water everyday helps decrease bloating (bonus!) and dry skin. It does feel hard sometimes to drink the recommended daily intake, which is around eight 8 ounces glasses. It is easy to forget with a busy schedule or some people prefer a sweeter tasting beverage. Adding fruit or vegetables to your water can help naturally sweeten your H2o. We love adding berries, cucumber or lemon to water and letting it soak in a jug of water overnight.

Add Fruit and Veggies To Your Diet

It's important to incorporate a ton of veggies and some fruits into your diet. As flu season upon us, this will help build up your immune system to get rid of those nasty viruses! With the weather being so frigid lately, it seems that all we crave is warm comfort food. Mac and cheese every night would be the dream, although not the healthiest choice! Its easy to substitute a salad or a side of veggies with your protein rather than a carb like bread or pasta. One of the best ways we find to add veggies into your daily diet, that is easy and tastes delicious, is making a green smoothie in the morning. Check out this link here for easy AND healthy green smoothie recipes. Making one of these with your breakfast will keep you full right up until your next meal and provide you with your daily veggie intake!
