Summer is the perfect time to plan a road trip and leave town for a few days! Whether its just up north or out of the province, a great road trip playlist is crucial for any lengthy car ride! We've picked some of our favourite tunes to help make your summer road trip the best one yet!

Justin Timberlake's New Album: Man of the Woods

I mean who isn't a Justin Timberlake fan?! His newest album Man Of The Woods is super catchy and the perfect album to listen to while driving. This album is easy to listen to even if you're not a JT lover (unlike us!), it really has something for everyone. It can be hard to pick out the right tunes that every passenger likes, but trust us, Justin Timberlake's newest album is a total crowd pleaser.

Fleetwood Mac: Rumours Album

An oldie but always a classic! The Fleetwood Mac Rumours album is a great road trip playlist as it has all the classics! Our favourites include Dream and Never Going Back Again. An oldie but a goodie!

We're loving the artist Shoffy right now, especially the song Motions. His music is really relaxed, catchy eclectic! Its great for driving as it's easy to listen to! As linked in the title, Soundcloud provides many different collaborations with Shoffy and other artists, giving you different variations of songs depending on what mood everyone is in!

Cold War Kids

One of our favourite bands, especially for road trips is the upbeat indie rock band from Long Beach California, Cold War Kids. Its fun music that laid back and perfect for those long car rides! Our favourite song is Miracle Mile from the album Dear Miss Lonelyhearts. A must for those indie music lovers!

Holiday: Father's Day Gift Ideas

We can't believe Father's Day is just around the corner! It seems like we just finished buying our Mother's Day gifts and are now starting to brainstorm some ideas for our dads! When thinking of a Father's Day gift this year it's good to keep in mind your budget, the type of dad you have and how much time you have to buy a gift. Depending on how you are purchasing your gift, if you're ordering from online, it may take a bit longer, so give yourself some time. We love shopping for our dads because every year it seems that gifts get cooler and more unique. We've listed some of our favourite gift ideas for your dad this Father's Day ranging in price and fitting for all different types of dads!

Beer Caddy

If your dad is more of a laid back cottage guy, a beer caddy is the perfect gif! Who wants to keep going back and forth to the cottage to get another beer when you can use a caddy to carry beers down to the dock? We love this hand-carved caddy personalized with initials on the side. It even features a cute little opener built into the side of the caddy itself. This makes for the perfect Father's Day gift. Its great for the cottage, while entertaining or going back and forth to the dock!

JBL Portable Speakers

Speakers are always a safe bet for your dad on Father's Day! JBL speakers are probably one of our favourite brands to buy, as we find them great quality, extremely easy to bring anywhere and the price is great.  Heading away for the weekend or to the cottage, these are the easiest bluetooth speakers!

Gage Leather Strap Watch

If you're looking for a safer gift to buy your dad, a classic leather watch strap is the perfect choice! This gift falls under the higher price point bracket, ranging around $150-$350. It's a timeless gift that your dad will have years to come!

Bacon and Bourbon Candle

This is a great gift option that won't break the bank! Its a masculine scent thats fun, fresh and perfect for burning at the cottage. Its's a great price and awesome gift to pair with another small gift, such as with BBQ accessories or with a set of beer or whiskey glasses.

George Foreman Electric Indoor Grill and Panini Press

If you're dad considers himself a chef and enjoys cooking on his time off, the George Foreman electric indoor grill and and panini press is the ultimate gift. It's perfect for grilling outside in the summer for barbecues and using indoors as well. Perfect for making the famous "dad" grilled sandwiches!

Apple Watch

If you're wanting to splurge on your dad this year, what better present than the multi-purpose Apple watch? Our manager Jill has one and it serves so many purposes, they are absolutely awesome! It's perfect for a dad that is on the go and doesn't always look at his phone for texts, as it has iMessage, email, apps and even fitness tracking features. You can't go wrong with this splurge!

Read: Summer List 2018

Now that the weather is finally nice, a hammock, a book and a glass of wine sounds like absolute perfection to us! A relaxing afternoon reading in the backyard or at the cottage on the dock is the perfect way to relax and unwind. From Oprah's top picks, to the hottest celeb's favourites, we've listed our top summer reads! If you haven't already noticed, we love a good suspense! We have only heard good things about these books and are dying to read them this summer! Perfect for the dock with a glass of rosé. Hope you enjoy! XX.

The Favourite Sister

From the same author as the bestseller Luckiest Girl Alive, Jessica Knoll has just released a new wildly entertaining addition to her top sellers, The Favourite Sister. This is what every celeb is reading right now! It's one of those books that you can't put down! A story of two reality television sisters, in a cast of five self-made women. From backstabbing behaviour, to lies and betrayal, the rivalry between the Courtney sisters runs deep. This murder mystery is one that you won't be able to put down this summer! Definitely a binge-worthy cottage pick. An absolute nail biter that is at the top of our list this season!

The Perfect Mother

The Perfect Mother, named one of the most anticipated books of the summer, by Vanity Fair, is at the top of our list this season! It's set to be a major motion picture, starring Kerry Washington. This suspenseful novel, written by Aimee Mollary, centres around a group of new mothers living in Brooklyn, New York. Every week they meet up for some much needed adult time. During a weekly meet up, one of the character's baby is abducted from his crib. This thriller centers around mystery, lies, secrets, friendships and marriage. This sounds like an intense mystery that we are dying to read!

An American Marriage

At the top of Oprah's must-read summer novels, An American Marriage is the story of a newlywed couple, a young executive and a thriving young artist. When they start to settle into married life and their new routine together, Roy (husband) is convicted of a crime he did not commit and sentenced to twelve years in prison. Celestial takes comfort in her childhood friend and begins a relationship with him. After five years, her husband is Roy's conviction is overturned and he is released from prison early. An American Marriage shares the story of a heartfelt love triangle and described a twist on the traditional love story, sounds the perfect summer read to us!

I'll Be Gone in The Dark

This chilling novel is based on the findings from Michelle McNamara, a crime journalist who desperately tracked down Pat Joseph James DeAngelo, also known as the "Golden State Killer". McNamara tragically died investigating this case.  I'll Be Gone in The Dark focuses on her findings and her actual work that was done on the case. McNamara started the book, however after her death her husband Patt Oswalt, lead colleague and researcher finished the book. This true crime classic is a compelling and suspenseful read that creates a clear snapshot in American history. An absolute must if you're interested in the crime genre!

If you haven't noticed already, most of the books on our summer reading list are suspenseful and a little heavier of a read. However, if you want something light and easy that doesn't make you think too deeply into a topic while reading, one of our absolute favourites that was published quite some time ago, is Tina Fey's Bossypants. It came out a few years ago, however we could read this book over and over again. It's raw, witty and not to mention hilarious. We love Tina Fey in comedies, SNL and found her writing style to be refreshing. Her "tell it like it is" attitude is humorous and makes for a light and uplifting read! If you haven't read Bossypants already, this is a classic for a light and easy summer read!

Food: Summer Breakfast Recipes

We can't start our day and be productive with a nutritional breakfast! Whether it be something quick and easy (prepping before bed is always the best way to reduce time in the morning while rushing to get out of the door) or a breakfast that may take a little bit of time, we're giving you some of our favourite breakfast recipes! If you are always strapped for time in the morning and seem to be rushing, these breakfast recipes are easy and perfect for those early mornings when you're are rushing to get out of the door! We hope you enjoy our favourite summer recipes! XX.

Our number one go-to breakfast recipes is a classic veggie omelette. Quick, easy and super healthy! One of the great things about this breakfast is you can alter it to your diet and add in whatever you're feeling that day! To add extra protein to keep you full longer, opting to add in some type of meat is a great option. We usually make a veggie omelette using 3 large eggs, you can also use egg whites, depending on how healthy you want to go! We love to add in spinach, cherry tomatoes, green onion, a little bit of sharp cheddar and avocado on top of course!

  • 3 eggs (or you can use 1 cup of egg whites)
  • 1/4 cup of sliced cherry tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup of chopped green onion
  • Spoonful of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup of spinach
  • 1/2 an avocado

1. Mix eggs in bowl. Pour into heated pan.

2. Let the mixed egg mixture cook for around 3 minutes. Add your veggies on top.

3. Let the veggies cook into the egg and flip one side over the other. Flip the omelette to let both sides cook.

4. Add some sliced avocado on top.

Overnight Oats

Overnight Oats is by far one of our favourite breakfast options and the easiest! It takes maximum 5 minutes to make this breakfast, does it get any easier than that?! It's healthy and the oats keep you full until lunch. Bonus!

  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup of milk (you can use any type of milk you normally use (almond, soy, 1%, skim etc)
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seas
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1. Pour rolled oats into a bowl and add milk. Make sure the milk covers about 3/4 of the oats. You don't want the oats to be too milky in the morning, so if the oats are completely covered by the milk, you have put too much in.

2. Add chia seeds and cinnamon. Stir and mix well.

3. Place in the fridge before you go to bed.

4. In the morning, the mixture should be soft and not milky. Add 2 spoonfuls of yogurt on the top (we like greek) and add your choice of fruit. We usually add whatever is in season. In the summer we love blueberries, raspberries and peaches on top!

Kayla Itsines Acai Bowl

Our favourite breakfast in the summertime is an acai bowl. It's perfect for those hot mornings that you don't feel like having a heavy breakfast.

  • 1 cup of fresh spinach
  • 1 cup of fresh kale
  • 1/2 of banana
  • 3.5 oz of Acai berry pulp
  • 1/2 of frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 cup of almond milk

  • 1/2 sliced banana
  • 1/4 of granola
  • 1-2 tsp of unsweetened coconut
  • Cinnamon or drizzle of honey

1. Put the acai mixture into a blender. Blend on low until the bigger pieces of fruit start to liquify. Add some milk to make it more of a liquid. Gradually get up to a high speed for about 15-20 seconds.

2. Once the mixture is well blended, pour into a bowl. Add your desired toppings.

Perfect on the patio in the morning when its super hot outside!

Oh She Glow's Green Smoothie

One of our favourite breakfast options and not just for breakfast but as a snack or even for lunch when you're in a pinch, is a green smoothie. They are super fast in the morning when you're rushing to get out the door and not to mention extremely healthy! You can get your daily does of greens in just one smoothie! We love making extra to have the next day if we have no time to make another quick smoothie in the morning, this recipe keeps well (keep in an airtight container)!

  • 1 cup of coconut water
  • 1/2 cup of mango juice
  • 2 large granny smith apples (chopped)
  • 2 cups of red leaf lettuce
  • 2.3 cups of loosely packed parsley leaves
  • 1/3 cup of packed fresh cilantro
  • 1/2 cup of frozen mango chunks
  • 1/4 of packed avocado
  • 4 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 2 small, pinky sized pieces of fresh peel turmeric
  • 5 to 6 large ice cubes

1. Add the coconut water and mango juice into a blender on high speed.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients. Blend on high until the consistency is silky. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking.

3. Serve! You may want to save some of the mixture for the next day. Remember to place in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours!

**It's best in the morning for breakfast or in the afternoon as a healthy snack!**

Avocado & Eggs on Toast

We saved the best for last! Along with the omelette, this recipe does take a bit more time. So if you wake up a bit later and are always rushing through the week, maybe save this option for the weekend when you're not on a time sensitive schedule.

  • 1 piece of whole grain toast (we love Rye too!)
  • Handful of Cherry tomatoes
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 an avocado
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper

1. Mix eggs in a bowl, pour onto a heated sauce pan. Stir egg mixture to make scrambled eggs (or any type of egg you prefer).

2. In a separate bowl, take an avocado and mash it up. Add a squirt of lemon juice and salt and pepper. Mix around in the bowl. Take your piece of bread and toast it.

3. Place smashed avocado on the toast. Please scrambled eggs on top of avocado mixture. Add some diced cherry tomatoes and salt and pepper.

4. Eat and enjoy!

Summer Vacation: The June Motel

If you can't get away for a summer vacation this year, staycations are always a great option! One of the places we are dying to check out this summer is the June Motel located in Prince Edward County. It's one of the top weekend getaways spots for the summer. If you're wanting a girls weekend and are looking for something different than heading up north or going into the city, the June Motel is the perfect option. From the fun retro interiors, to the beautiful surrounding vineyards, this weekend getaway will not disappoint!

What To Do

Whether you're in search of a relaxing girls weekend, including yoga and chilling out in your room or by the campfire, or an active weekend, the June Motels offer all of that! If you're looking for a weekend full of swimming, hiking and water sports, Prince Edward County has it all!

It's always nice to get out of the room for the day and explore what is around the motel itself. Enjoy some sunshine and kayaking on Lake Ontario or relax on the beach. You can also rent canoes or hop on a boat cruise for the day (all accessible through the Prince Edward Country website). One of our favourite beaches to hit is the Sandbanks Provincial Park, it's only about a 20 minute drive from the June Motel.

Another one of our favourite things to do while in Prince Edward County (aside from staying at the June Motel of course!) is going for some hikes and even a horseback trail ride! If you're going on this weekend trip with your significant other, these are a must on your list! The trail rides are usually about 60 minutes and they take you through the mountain trail that overlooks Picton Bay, which is stunning!

If you're looking for a great hiking trail, that is accommodating for all fitness levels, depending on if you want a short walk or a long run or hike, check out Macaulay Conservation area! Its close to the June Motel and makes for a gorgeous scenic route!

Where To Eat

One of the things we love about the June Motel is they offer a breakfast in bed option if you're feeling a slower start to your day. If you're wanting to have a full day and don't want spend time finding a breakfast place, they also have a grab and go breakfast option in the Wine Lobby. This includes detox juices and "healthy" pastries.

If you're looking to have a dinner out, we love the Waupoos Estates Winery Restaurant. It offers unique dishes and tons of homemade options that differ from your typical menu. Their farm to table focus, gives the menu an incredibly fresh take on each dish. They also serve wine and beer (Clafeld Cider), both produced on the estate.

Where To Drink

The June Motel offers an awesome indoor-outdoor bar, called the "Wine Lobby". It has wine and beer from local wineries and breweries, also offering some cheese and charcuterie boards from artisans The County.

One of the wineries that we haven't been to but we're dying to try on our next trip to Prince Edward County is the By Chadsey's Cairns winery. This heritage winery offers a variety of all different types of wine, including rarer wines like Muscat and Chenin Blanc. A must if you're looking for a authentic winery to check out over the weekend!

If you're not a huge wine fan and enjoy some cold brews (especially in the summer!), Prince Edward County has some awesome and really eclectic breweries. One of the breweries we're really wanting to check out next time we're in town is Parsons Brewing Company. This family owned brewery specializes in authentic craft beer. Their most popular beers are the Crushable Pilsner, Parsons Pale and Devil's Right Hand premium stout. They also serve Mexican dishes, bonus! What better way to pair a refreshing cold beer with some tacos or guac and chips?! Yum!

Even better when you don't have to work on Monday! This warm weather lately is making us so excited for all our favourite mules, slides, sandals and sneakers paired with all the fun cropped denim this season! We're loving cropped denim with fresh white sneakers, mule, and a cute blouse or  tee. If you're thinking of heading to a patio this upcoming long weekend at some point, we love keeping it casual. Such as our Blue Eyes denim jacket with tee (Amuse Society Tanner tee) or blouse underneath and some fun denim. These pieces are casual enough for a daytime patio but still super cute incase you head to dinner afterwards!

Recipe: Healthy Snacks When You're On The Go

Our busy schedules can often get in the way of our daily routines. It is so hard to always stay on track with healthy eating habits and sometimes it's easier to grab the most accessible snack when you're in a pinch, which doesn't always mean the healthiest. We find the key to success in terms of healthy eating and staying on track is meal prep. Yes it does sound boring but it works! It's so easy to switch on some Netflix instead of doing a few minutes of meal prep before bed, however when you don't bring a lunch or plan what you're going to have, that's when you often opt for the quickest and easiest choice. Which might not always be the healthiest option. We wanted to share some of our favourite go-to recipes that are super easy and healthy. They will make such a difference when you're stuck for ideas on healthy snacks and also provide you with some better options than reaching for that delectable chocolate chip cookies are your local Starbucks (yes we are guilty of that too!). Hope you enjoy! XX

One of the easiest and healthiest snacks to make when you're in a rush that only takes a few minutes is some apple slices and a spoonful of almond butter. The almond butter provides you with some protein (keeping you full) and satisfies that afternoon sugar craving. It's one of our daily go-to's!

One of her favourite recipes for a great healthy snack is her Beauty Seed Bars. Beauty: Spring Hair Trends

Whether it's style or beauty, we're always interested in trying out the hottest and latest trends for each upcoming season. Hairstyles are always a trend that we're looking to try out and change from season to season. A new hairstyle doesn't always have a to be super dramatic. It can be as little as a few layers, or some highlights. We also love a fresh chop for the spring, as shorter hair for the warmer months is easier to maintain. We are sharing everything thats trending for hair this season! From the hottest cuts, to the perfect colour, we've got you covered! Hope you enjoy! XX.

Blunt Lob

The blunt lob is one of our favourite hairstyles this season. It's super popular right now, as its a different take on bob. This has been one of the hottest hair trends for the past couple years and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The key to this cut is the internal layers, making it super light and wispy. We love this length styled with beach waves. Another great thing about the lob is that is works well with pretty much every hair texture. The blunt lob also looks great on every face shape, as it doesn't intensely shape your face yet still frames it.

A fresh blunt bob is always in style. Who doesn't love a fresh chop?! It's nice to have a some length taken off for the warmer months, as we find shorter hair easier to maintain on those hot humid summer days. A blunt bob looks great pin straight with or with textured salt spray for a relaxed beach wave look. We love the Bumble and Bumble salt spray on wet hair. Spray on wet hair and scrunch a little and you're good to go. It will dry with a nice wave to it!

Layered textured ends

One of the most subtle ways to change up your look this season is to add some layered textures ends to your current hairstyle. Its an easy way and super maintainable way to give yourself a bit of a change for the spring. This trend is super versatile and can be done on pretty much any hair length. We find adding textured layers at the bottom of a fresh trim can transform your hair from boring to trendy in one go. To style this cut, you can wrap a few larger pieces of hair around a 1-inch barrel curling iron. The slight wave showcases the textured ends and gives you that carefree look!

Full rounded bangs

Bangs can be tricky! They often depend on your face shape and how thick the bangs are cut. One of the biggest trending styles for spring and summer hair is the full rounded bangs. They look great with a blunt bob, for a super sleek and chic look. A light wispy fringe is a perfect addition to the ultimate spring/summer hair!

Face Framing Balayage

One of the biggest hair trends that never seems to go out of style is balayage. Its the ultimate colouring technique for the girl who only wants to colour her hair once or twice a year. You can easily let this type of colouring grow out and it still looks great! We find when you addd a few pieces of lighter hair around the face, it can really help brighten up your face and add some warmth for the spring and summer.

Warm Honey Blonde Highlights

Highlights are always a nice addition to a solid colour, transitioning from winter to spring. We are loving the honey blonde colouring for spring. Its a great colour that adds warmth to your skin tone and looks great when you get a tan in the spring and summer. A honey blonde colour works for a lot of different complexions. It looks amazing with any shade of brown, instantly giving you that brightening boost! Perfect for the warmer months ahead (if it ever warms up!).

Fashion: Spring Mule Favourites

We're seriously hoping for some warmer weather in the next few weeks, because this Winter has felt extremely long. It feels like we're completely missing Spring? Anyone else with us? We're so ready to pull out our cute mules, slides and flats for the Spring (if it ever comes!). We wanted to share with you our top mule picks for this season, in hopes that this anticipation for cute Spring clothing will actually bring some warm weather?! We're still obsessing over a great pair of slides for the season. They're still a super hot trend this season and we find them one of the easiest footwear styles out there right now. From cropped jeans, to straight, to a kick-flare style, we find mules are chic with just about anything. Sometimes it can be tricky to find the right ones, we thought we would help you out and share ours! We hope you enjoy! XX.

1. Gucci Princetown Slippers

We're still loving the Princeton slides. They're a classic leather slide with fur trim, giving this shoe a bit of an edge. The Princeton slide are a great transition shoe from Spring, to Summer, right through to Fall. We're loving these slides paired with straight leg denim or slightly flared jeans for the ultimate on-trend look. If you're looking for the same look as the Gucci slides but don't necessarily want to splurge, the Steve Madden Doriana mule is also a great alternative.

2. Free People At Ease Loafer

Another mule that we're loving for Spring and Summer is the At Ease loafer from Free People. This staple leather slides are perfect for every occasion. A lot of us here at V.O.C have these shoes and are planning to buy a new pair for this season. They're super easy and not to mention extremely comfortable! They come in a wide variety of colours (bonus!). We find it the easiest for styling and pairing pieces together when you buy a neutral colour. We love the black and beige, they both go with everything and anything! Perfect with denim or even a cute lightweight casual dress. These are definitely one of our easiest and stylish Spring shoe picks.

3. Madewell Harper Heeled Mule

The Madewell Harper heeled mule is perfect for dressier occasions, but also great for a daytime work shoe. These pair super well with a pencil skirt, trouser or denim for a casual look. The Harper heel is a perfect mix of a fun spring shoe that is right on trend for the season, yet will still act as your classic heel when in a pinch.

 4. Matt and Nat Loafers

We've always been a huge fan of the brand Matt and Nat! We're absolutely loving their new shoe line, which has some awesome minimalist styles for the Spring. This vegan leather brand is reasonably priced and has some super trendy styles. We love how their line is sleek and simple, allowing these shoes to go with just about anything in your closet.

 5. Sam Edelman Loafers

The last pair of mules that we are loving for this season are the Sam Edelman Katy woven leather slides. They are a little more casual looking, but great for an everyday look. We chose the cognac colour over the black, which gives these shoes a little bit more of a vintage look. The Katy mule styled with a solid white tee and a pair of denim is perfect from anything to Sunday brunch, to dinner with the girls. We're obsessed!
