Travel: 5 Long Weekend Getaways

With the long weekend fast approaching, we wanted to share some of our favourite weekend getaways with you that are just a short car ride away from Oakville! Our top 5 picks make for a great weekend getaway, day trip or week long vacation spot. If you're looking for a fun trip for the upcoming long weekend or for the summer, we highly recommend hitting up these spots!

Enjoy! XO.

1. Muskoka

This is a no brainer. Heading to Muskoka on a weekend in the summer is a must for everyone that lives in the GTA. It's such a close and easy way to experience a change of scenery. Plus, there are so many things to do from boating, hiking, swimming, canoeing, etc. and each charming town (Bala, Port Carling, Rosseau and Minnett) offers an array of cute little shops, cafes and waterfront views!

A few hotels we love up there include Gravenhurst, the J.W. Marriot and Deerhurst Resort. Rates vary from $100-$300 per night or more in the high season, and space fills up quickly so we recommend booking as far in advance as possible!

At the gorgeous JW Marriot (pictured below), you can rent kayaks, canoes and participate in water sports (tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding). Another favourite activity of ours is the the Muskoka Zipline and Aerial park just outside Bracebridge...adrenaline junkies this is a must! Whether your long weekend is jam-packed with activities or just chilling by the water and hanging at the campfire, Muskoka for a long weekend is the best getaway.

2. Niagara-on-the-Lake

Another weekend or day trip that is worth taking is a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Soak up the charm this town has to offer with historical buildings, cute bed and breakfasts, villas, hotels, and more...There is no shortage of accommodations here!  One of our favourite spots to get away for a few days is the Oban Inn & OSpa which are just minutes away from all of the great restaurants, theatres and shopping in the town. After dinner at the Oban Inn, be sure to visit the Maple Leaf Fudge shop and Shaw Cafe and wine bar (pictured below). If you are a chocolate lover then this store will be worth the trip alone!

3. Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is centered in the heart of Picton on the Bay of Quinte and is known for its breathtaking views, beautiful sand dunes and massive limestone cliffs. If you plan a trip there, you'll never be bored. Expect to explore the beaches, take a boat trip, tour museums, hike or cycle through a trail, golf, horseback ride, head to a spa, check out the food scene and more...the activities are endless. Two of our favourite spots to see include the Manse Boutique Spa (because what girl doesn't love a relaxing spa day?!) and the Perfect Lil' Bakeshop

4. Staycation in Toronto

Although it's nice to getaway for the long weekend, if you're not able to escape the city, there are so many things to check out in Toronto.

If you haven't been to the Distillery District to check out their aesthetically pleasing pubs and cool eateries, you're seriously missing out. Visit Mill St. Brew Pub, which has a fun and relaxed atmosphere that's great for having a few drinks and some pub food!

Kensington Market is another gem that we often forget about. It offers unique, one of a kind shops and a diverse range of eateries. You have to try their Peameal Bacon Sandwich...yum!

Last but not least is Evergreen Brick Works (pictured) which is known for its farmers market and gorgeous event space that many people wed at. There is also a great hiking trail. Click here for "The Top 10 Things to See & Do at Evergreen Brickworks".

If you're looking for the total Toronto experience and planning a staycation, we highly recommend staying at one of the unique boutique hotels Toronto has to offer. One of our favourites is the Windsor Arms Hotel (pictured below).

 5. Collingwood

Last but not least, Collingwood is a great option for a weekend getaway this summer. From snow to sun, this place is always a great time! Like other locations we have mentioned above, Blue Mountain has the perfect balance between relaxation and fun activities to keep you busy this long weekend! Whether you're thinking of heading here for a relaxing couples weekend, a fun girls weekend with your gal pals or bringing the kids for a family weekend, it has it all.

For accommodations, we love the stunning Westin Trillium House (pictured below). From the pool, to the waterfront view, the outdoor patio and spa, this hotel is perfect to unwind for the weekend!

For a spa-day, you have to visit the Scandinave Spa! The treatments are incredible, however, even if you just wanted to use the pools for the day, it is definitely worth it! We would totally recommend to finish off a relaxing weekend!

If you're looking for a little more of an adventure filled weekend, the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster is a crazy adrenaline rush...and totally worth it for kids and adults. There are also the Apex Bagjump, Canoe and Kayak rentals, and the Blue Mountain hiking trails
