Q&A: 20 questions with Terri

With a new addition to the V.O.C team, we thought it would be a great opportunity to post a Q&A blog to help you get to know our newest associate Terri a little better if you haven't already met her. From her cool yet polished style, to her friendly demeanour, Terri is the perfect addition to V.O.C! Check out Terri's answers to this in-depth Q&A. From guilty pleasures, to her favourite style icons, we've asked it all! Hope you enjoy XX.

1. Where are you from and what is your role here at the store? How did you hear about V.O.C?

I was born in Montreal and moved to Oakville when I was 10. I met my husband in Oakville when I was in university, studying Commerce at McMaster. I've lived in Oakville for the past 20+ years and have always been familiar with the downtown area. I have always loved shopping at the boutiques on Lakeshore. I started shopping here years ago and fell in love with all the brands that V.O.C carries. I am currently working as a part-time sales associate. I love helping customers find pieces they love and they feel great in! By far the best part of the job!

2. What was your very first job?

My first job ever was a cashier at Loblaws, in Oakville! It used be at Dundas and Trafalgar. I worked there a few times a week, all throughout high school and university.

3. If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

It would definitely be something that would involve a lot of travelling. I would love to see so many different parts of the world. It would be amazing to experience different cultures, with emphasis on the food and fashion in each! I think if I could pick any job it would be in the field of fashion!

4. What are your favourite brands and how best would you describe your personal style? Who are your style icons?

I am denim obsessed! I absolutely love Levi's and Paige jeans. I recently just purchased the Paige Hoxton Bali jeans and I am in LOVE with them. I recently bought the Levi's 501 taper and they are a great jean for the weekend while I'm running around with my kids! I wear them at least 3 times a week. I also really love Bella Dahl, I find myself gravitating towards a lot of their tops as they are super unique and great quality.

Hmmm this is a hard one! I've never really tried to categorize my style into one particular look because to be honest it's always changing. I love mixing feminine pieces with more laid back casual items. Such as ripped Levi's boyfriend jeans with a delicate blouse. I would say that my style is casual with a feminine and bohemian flare.

This question is so hard! I have so many style icons! If I had to choose,  Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz are my top 3 style crushes! I love their fun and casual style. It's never over the top but still super trendy.

5. What is your favourite type of cuisine?

Another hard question! My background is Italian, so my comfort food is Italian. I love a great homemade eggplant parmesan or lasagna. I also love exploring other types of food. Such as Japanese, Indian and greek. I love Piazza Bistro in the Town Square in Oakville. I find their Italian food so fresh and authentic.

6. What is your fitness routine?

I love being active, it helps keep my mind and body feeling well! I work out at the One Health Club here in Oakville (located on Upper Middle Road) about 3x a week or as much as I can depending on my schedule. My gym workouts vary from group classes, such as body pump or spinning to yoga. I recently tried this class called "pound-drum". It is a cardio class using weighted drumsticks to help sculpt while burning a ton of calories! I also love being active with the kids, whether it be skating, walking or hiking! Exercising has always been a big part of my lifestyle, even when I was pregnant with both my kids.

7. Would you say you are a morning person or a night owl?

I am definitely NOT a morning person! I like my quiet time during the morning and would rather not talk to anyone (including my husband and kids... which is tough) until after I've had my morning coffee. After that I am good to go! I am always busy at night thinking of "one more thing I should do before I go to bed!" I mentally make lists of what events I have coming up and what the next day holds... sometimes finding it hard to fall asleep- so definitely a night owl!

8. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Dishonest people. I am a very honest person and I would rather tell it like it is, than tell someone a lie. I think this makes you a more genuine and open person.

9. What show are you currently into right now?

I love the show This is Us! It's such a great show about family and life. It's so addictive too. I watched the first series on Netflix and I am currently watching second season on TV right now. Every episode is amazing and I seriously cry at almost every one!

10. What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Ohh this is a tough one! I love to vacation and there are so many kinds of vacation! I love a great 'relaxing' vacay on the beach - like Jamaica or in Florida at our family home. I recently went to Italy with the whole family and LOVED being immersed in the culture, learning about the history, people and food!

11. What is the coolest place you have ever been to?

Cordoba in Spain! It's an amazing little town in the south of Spain that is all enclosed by ancient city walls! You can walk the entire town on cobble stone roads with no cars. The most incredible part of this town is the Mezquita - the largest mosque in the world! It started off as a cathedral and then it was transformed into a mosque. It now remains a cathedral-mosque with beautiful monuments and art from 2 diverse cultures. It was amazing to witness all the history and changes that have been made over time!

12. What are 3 beauty products you can't live without?

I absolutely love Eminence organic face products! Everything from their cleansers, to moisturizers and masques. Secondly, I love MAC under eye concealer. It works so well and doesn't look to thick under your eyes. It's perfect if you didn't get much sleep the night before! The last beauty product I can't live without is the ROC lip gloss. Its perfect for adding some shine to your lips but also keeping them hydrated during these cold winter months!

13. What is your favourite thing to do in your down time/ when you're not working?

I love to just spend time at home hanging out with my kids and doing something active. Right now we love going outdoor skating or going tobogganing. Its awesome that they are now at an age where they enjoy activities and it can be a fun family activity. Another one of my favourite things to do in my spare time is a ladies night! Going out for dinner or drinks with my girlfriends is always so much fun and a nice break from my chaotic weeks!

14. What is your guilty pleasure?

This is an easy question! Salty! Anything and everything salty! Especially at night, which is terrible. Don't give me chips or I will eat the whole bag!

15. What is the best purchase you ever made?

My leather Mackage jacket! I bought it over 5 years ago and still love it! I wear it all the time. It literally goes with everything. I will wear with a tee, jeans and sneakers. Or I throw it over a dress and heels for a night out. Love!

16. What is one trend you are loving right now and dying to try?

This is tough because there are so many cute trends coming out for spring! I am really into the cropped flare jeans for spring. I saw them last spring and thought they wouldn't work on me. However, this season there is so many different lengths and washes that I love, such as some light wash distressed styles that I've seen!

17. What is one trend you wish you never tried/ or don't like?

Bangs. I tried bangs a few times in my life and it was horrible! They were so hard to maintain and my hair totally did not cooperate!

18. What are you most excited for in Spring?

Warm weather! I feel like I'm more excited than most years for Spring because of this frigid cold spell we've had the past few weeks. It has really made me appreciate the warmer weather! I am also really excited for amazing new spring fashion. I want to try more fun and flirty blouses. I love the look of a cropped feminine blouse with high waisted jeans. Super cute! I also love the look of a great spring floral dress with ankle booties!

19. What can't you leave the house without?

My Swell water bottle filled with cold water! I really try and drink water all day long to hydrate and counteract all the coffee!

20. What is your go-to drink?

I am really loving cold-pressed juices right now! They are so great to help boost your immune system, perfect for this time of year, and to add some of those extra veggies that you might miss throughout the day. I love Green Press, just a few blocks down from V.O.C. My go-to picks there are the carrot or beet juice. If I feel like I might be coming down with something, I always grab a ginger shot. It seems to always do the trick!

Q&A: 25 Questions with Store Manager Amanda

This week on the blog, we thought we'd do a Q&A with one of our Oakville Store Managers to share a little bit more about us, how we discovered V.O.C., and more! So here you have it, 25 questions with Amanda! In this post, we're giving you the scoop on Amanda where she answers everything from her first job to her guilty pleasure!

We hope you enjoy it! XO.

1. Where are you from and what's your role here at the store? How did you hear about VOC?

I'm from Oakville and have always shopped at V.O.C. I started shopping here when the store first opened in Oakville about 7 years ago.

2. What was your first job?

My first job was at a consignment store here in Oakville. I was 15 and in grade 9 when I got the job and worked there on and off for 6 years. It was such a fun place to work. I have always loved clothes and to work in an upscale consignment store, I was exposed to some of the coolest pieces and I learned a ton about different brands, the quality of certain clothes and gained an appreciation for well-made clothing. Not to mention all the vintage finds were amazing!

3. Where and what did you study at school?

I went to Carleton University in Ottawa. I studied Communications with a specialization in Media and Identity. It was such an interesting program because it was pretty broad you really got to pick the areas of Communications that particularly interested you. Ottawa was also a great city to live in for 4 years.

4. If you could do any job in the world what would it be?

I have always loved fashion since I was a child. I have always been obsessed with clothes from a young age, always planning outfits and dressing up in different outfits. When I was younger I always wanted to be involved in fashion somehow, however I do remember going through a phase where I wanted to be a teacher for the longest time.

5. Are you a morning person or night owl?

Probably not really either! I'm not one to stay up super late but I'm not one to sleep in super late either or wake up really early. I guess I'm kind of in the middle!

6. Dog or cat person?

Dog person, 100%. To be honest, cats kind of scare me!

7. Go to meal or favourite type of food?

That would be a toss up between Mexican and Italian. I would eat either everyday if I could.

8. What is your pet peeve?

When people chew really loudly or cut you off when you're talking. Both drive me crazy!

9. What is your guilty pleasure?

That is an easy question! Reality TV, 100%. Keeping Up With The Kardashians to be specific. I don't think I have ever missed an episode - probably shouldn't be saying that proudly haha!

10. What is the best purchase you ever made?

Thats a tough one! However, I would have to say, all things considered, my UGG slippers are one of the best things I've ever bought. They literally are the coziest slippers ever and I wear them all the time when I'm home.

11. If you could buy anything right now what would it be?

Probably this black leather Erin Templeton tote bag that I've been eying for a while!

12. One style/trend you love and want to try?

I wish I could pull off overalls! I absolutely love the look of them. I've been wanting these Levi overalls for the Fall but I don't think I can pull off the look!

13. What are your favourite brands at the store?

My top three favourite brands that we carry at the store would have to be Amuse, Rails and Bella Dahl. I can't resist buying at least one item from each brand when we get new arrivals in the store!

14. What is a trend you're excited for most this Fall/Holiday season?

I am loving the cropped slightly flared jeans with ankle booties. It kind of has a vintage vibe to it, which I love! I am also loving anything camel coloured for fall... or slip on loafers! So cute.

15. Your top two style icons?

I absolutely love anything that Sienna Miller wears, she always looks so cool and chic! I also love anything model Elyse Taylor wears and also blogger Emma Hill from London. I love how each of their style is simple yet cool. They all add vintage or boho accents to their outfits, which I love!

16. Trend or trends you hate?

I hate acid wash jeans! I also don't really know if this was ever a trend but I really don't like  long sleeve tops under short sleeve tops. I just don't understand it!

17. What is one trend you wish that you never wore?

That is such an easy question! Corduroy bell bottom pants. What was I thinking?!

18. What can't you leave the house without?

Vaseline lip gloss/lip chap, always! I would rather leave my phone at home than leave the house without lip chap.

19. What are your favourite beauty products?

I literally have been using the same skin care and makeup for like the past 6 years. I always use the Aveeno Moisturizer that has SPF 15 in it!I use it morning and night. I find it so moisturizing without it being heavy and leaving your skin oily. I also love and have been using these products for forever, Lancome concealer and the dual finish powder. They are my staple items I use everyday. I don't like thick makeup and I find the Lancome powder is perfect and light along with the concealer.

20. What is your go to drink?

Moscow mule - especially in the summer! I think one of the best places that serves Moscow mules believe it or not is Earls! They are always so good from there! This drink has a little kick and is very refreshing. If you like anything ginger flavoured you will love this drink!

21. What is your favourite restaurant?

I don't have one particular restaurant that I love, I have a few! However one place that stands out in my mind for having some of the best food is the Italian restaurant La Pentola that is part of the boutique hotel Opus in Vancouver. They have amazing homemade fresh pasta! One of my favourites, for sure!

22. When you aren't working, how do you spend your free time?

I like spending time with friends and family. Its always fun going into Toronto for a night out or out for dinner. I love just chilling out and relaxing when not working. A night in involving sweats and Netflix is my idea of relaxation. Also, a face mask and a bath are a perfect combination. It sounds weird but I also find working out not necessarily relaxing haha but a great way to de-stress!

23. What are your top 2 favourite TV shows?

This is a tricky question as well! However, I love Entourage and Big Little Lies. HBO always has the best shows!

24. What is your favourite workout?

It's hard to find a workout you actually like and that doesn't make feeling like working out such a daunting chore. I started doing kickboxing at Big Hit studios about a year ago. I'm addicted now, it's such a fun and intense workout. The classes always go by so fast! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has trouble finding a workout that they don't get bored of.

25. What is your dream vacation?

I have always wanted to go to a ranch in Montana. I've researched some amazing ranches in the mountains where you stay in cabins, ride horses, enjoy the outdoors and have bonfires at night. That sounds like so much fun and different from a typical vacation!

Q&A with Emily: First month with baby

For our store owner, Emily, this summer is definitely different from years prior (in the best way!) since the arrival of her first baby, Arthur Bennett Charles, who was born in June! We couldn't be more excited to welcome this little guy to the V.O.C. team and can't wait to spend more time with him and watch him grow up! For this week's post, we're picking Emily's brain about all things Arthur and how she's been doing the first month post-pardum. From what she's learned this last month, to must-have baby products, Emily is sharing it all in this post!

We hope you enjoy it! XX

1. First of all, can you tell us a little bit about Arthur?!

Arthur Bennett Charles was born on June 2nd. He's the sweetest little guy and somehow has a calm disposition despite his parents' personalities. He already has funny quirks that make me laugh and of course he's absolutely adorable. Can you tell that I'm in total love with this little guy?

2. Before Arthur was born, what was one thing you did to prepare that helped ease the process of adding a new family member?

Jeff and I talked about Art all of the time. We to him, we talked about him, we pictured him in our life together. We also asked all of our friends a million questions on how to adjust and what to expect. You can never be prepared for how drastically your life is going to change but understanding that everyone goes through it and that the first 90 days are going to be a challenge helps the adjustment period. I think we were also totally ready for the next stage in life. Both Jeff and I are 35- we've traveled a ton, we have great friends and have had amazing life experiences. We're obviously going to keep doing all these things, but it helps knowing that we're ready for the next phase and chose it.

3. What was one thing you wished you had known before the baby, that you know now?

Everyone told me to sleep as much as I could before the baby. I wish I had been told to enjoy my independence more. I was so focused on resting up before his arrival when I wish I had done more out of the house both solo and with Jeff in the last few weeks of pregnancy. I never have a moment alone anymore and I miss my solitude and ability to do anything on a whim!

5. Can you share one thing you've learned in the past month?!

You can really get by on very little sleep. I am shocked at how I'm able to function on a few hours. From someone who loves their sleep I never understood how mom's were able to function on a few hours. It's totally totally true and totally manageable. Coffee really helps! Plus family naps on the couch are my favourite.

6. Anything you wished moms had told you and/or not told you pre-baby?

I was not prepared for the physical changes post-pardom. I knew it would be awhile before the pre-baby figure returns (it's going to be a long road ahead) - but I wasn't prepared for the physical shifting of bones and hips and muscles and joints after the baby. I was very uncomfortable towards the end of my pregnancy and I thought the pain would disappear the minute he came out. I'm shocked how the pain and discomfort has continued and even worsened since he arrived. It's really quite incredible what the body does!

7. Do you have any advice you want to give to soon to be moms?

Enjoy your baby! I'm shocked at how much work and time and effort it takes to look after a baby. As a super Type A, productive person, I struggle with how little I accomplish in a day now. But then I remind myself that my job right now is to be Art's mom and that I should embrace and enjoy the time together. I wish he could stay this small forever (but sleep through the night...!).

8. What's one baby product you/Arthur can't live without?

Arthur LOVES his Dock-a-Tot. It's the most expensive pillow you can purchase but it's a lifesaver. Every new mom should have one.

9. What has been your go-to meal or craving since Arthur arrived?

Luckily my love for healthy food (salads and smoothies and fish) has returned. While I was pregnant I was a total carb-avore and sugar addict- which was something new to me.  I felt like I could have drunk an entire bottle of maple syrup, I was in need of so much sugar. Now the idea makes me want to vomit. Ever since Art arrived I've been craving fruits and veggies and fish again. I eat sushi and drink cold pressed juice like it's my day job.

10. What are you most looking forward to doing now that Arthur is here?

I can't wait to go for a run again. I miss being physically active. My body is craving exercise. That first run will be a struggle but I cannot wait. 2 more weeks until I get the go-ahead to start!

11. Any must have beauty product recommendations post baby?

Anything quick! My showers and get-ready routine have been cut down to 10 minutes. I never understood how mom's said they don't have time to get ready. I now totally understand it and savour the weekends when I can take a long shower while Jeff is home. I have never enjoyed showering so much in my life.

12. How are you taking time for yourself since Arthur arrived? Any recommendations for how to relax?

I haven't figured this one out yet! Art and I went for my first pedicure this week. It was a game changer. I felt like a human again. The trick is to go RIGHT when they fall asleep otherwise you end up like this with a sleeping baby on you the entire time...

20 Questions with Shelby

20 Questions with Shelby

1. Where are you from? How did you hear about V.O.C and what is your role here at the store?

I’m from Oakville!
I first heard about V.O.C. when my boss at my first internship said she had a connection to the owner, so that’s how I first reached out to Emily!
At the store, I help with buying and receiving new arrivals, managing the website and social media, organizing and planning photoshoots, and any marketing that we do!
2. You have an awesome background working in E-Commerce. So obviously you love all things related to not only fashion but technology as well. What is your favourite or most used App in your phone right now?
My most used app right now has to be Snapchat — I spend so much time on there seeing what my friends are up to or following brands. I find it to be a really good tool for getting inspiration, and love seeing what creative things other retailers and brands are doing on there.
3. Speaking of social media, what is the key behind taking a good Instagram?
I think the key is good lighting combined with good filters from Afterlight :)
4. If you could raid any celebrity or fashion blogger’s closet, whose would it be and why?

Since I was 12, Victoria Beckham has always been my favourite and I think her closet would be amazing. But I think if I had to raid or trade closets with someone for my day to day life, it would be Rosie Huntington Whiteley's — she has the best no-fuss casual style and always look so put together!

5. Favourite brands at V.O.C? Why?

I’m obsessing over Tularosa, Amuse, and Bella Dahl right now, but I really love all of the brands we carry! I think they all have really special and unique pieces that I am always drawn to, while still being really versatile and able to dress up and down. I like things that are multi purpose and that you can style for many different types of occasions.
6. What is one trend from the past that you hope never returns?
When I was in middle school, we use to wear cropped leggings under denim mini skirts…and looking back at some of those pictures, it looked terrible! I don’t know what we were thinking. So ya, I hope that trend never returns.
7. When you aren’t working, how do you like to spend your days off?
I love going for walks with my boyfriend’s dog, Holly (she's a yorkshire terrier!)! She gets so happy and it’s so nice to take her by the lake and get some fresh air every day. But i’m also guilty of diving into a new show and staying in all day on my days off.
8. What 3 beauty products could you not live without?
Lipstick, Argan Oil, Mascara.
9. You always look so put together! How would you best describe your style?
Thanks :) I definitely prefer staying casual. My favourite outfit is pretty simple and requires adding a statement piece to jeans and a t-shirt — like a great jacket or an awesome necklace or pair of shoes. I feel like that’s kind of my go-to.
10. Yoga or Boxing?
Boxing, for sure! It’s such a great stress reliever and you sweat like crazy so you know you had a good workout.
11. Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, what is your go-to cheat meal?
For sure I do. I love dessert…. and my cheat dessert is probably any apple-crumble type thing, pumpkin pie, or donuts.

12. What is your favourite movie of all time?

I love all of the really girly rom-coms… but my all time favourite has to be Fracture — it’s an awesome thriller that I don’t have to force my boyfriend to watch with me, and it never gets old!
13. Are you a dog or cat person?
Dog person! I’m so crazy allergic to cats otherwise i’m sure i’d love them too.
14. What is your biggest fear?
Bugs. I think I check for spiders around my bed every night before I go to sleep.
15. What or who makes you laugh the most?
My best friend who lives out in LA. We both have the weirdest sense of humour and we could literally die laughing every time we hang out.
16. Coffee or tea?
Tea — I’m a tea queen. Right now, i’m hooked on Rooibos tea.
17. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you bring and why?!
My boyfriend, some matches and Scrabble.
18. Any guilty pleasure or quirky habit you would like to share with us?!
Reality TV - I wish it wasn’t true!
19. Who has influenced you the most in your life?
Probably my mom. She's been a really great role model and gives the best advice! And she has always taught me that hard work, confidence and being a nice person goes a really long way!
20. Last but certainly not least...where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
This is the hardest question — I definitely don’t have a 5 year plan…but i’d love to be working in retail still, but whether it be in marketing, visuals, or buying — i’m not so sure, yet! I'm honestly so lucky to be doing what I love here every day, and would love to be doing this for as long as I can!

20 Questions With Our LV Store Manager, Sarah

1. Where are you from? And how did you hear about V.O.C.? What made you want to work here?

I was born and raised in Mississauga but moved to Oakville a couple of years ago! I was looking for a part-time summer job and came across V.O.C (Vocado at the time) on Instagram and fell in loooove with the store and all of the brands we carry so I instantly knew that I had to drop off my resume.

2. You’ve been at V.O.C. for 4 years now, what would you say is your favourite or most memorable thing about working here?

Time flies when you’re having fun ;) There are so many things that I love about working for V.O.C. First and foremost, the group of girls that I get to work with everyday are some of the most hardworking and inspiring people I’ve ever met. Second of all, I love getting to know our customers and helping them find the perfect outfit. And saving the most obvious reason for last...the clothing (duh). Everything here is to die for!

3. What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not working?

If I’m not working I’m most likely watching Netflix with my dog, hanging out with my friends and family, doing hot yoga or (most recently) attempting to perfect my non-existent cooking skills.

4. What’s your favourite thing about Toronto? Favourite thing about Oakville?

My favourite thing about Toronto is the vibe. There are SO many cool places to eat, shop, and hangout. I also love to people watch, so that’s always super entertaining in the city too. My favourite thing about Oakville is that it’s where my family lives...and Stoney’s.

5. Where/what is your go to restaurant?

I really love trying out new places but if I had to choose one place to eat at for the rest of my life it would have to be La Carnita. Those fish tacos and guacamole I tell ya, get me every time.

6. Guilty pleasure?

The Bachelor / Bachelorette franchise. I’ve watched it religiously ever since it aired. It’s almost embarrassing how much I look forward to Monday nights.

7. Do you have a “most embarrassing moment” story? Care to share?!

Oh gosh okay…this is so embarrassing. My boyfriend and I were leaving for New York super early in the morning and I was really pressed for time so he offered to do my laundry for me (what a gem). When I got to his PARENTS place later that night, he had hung a pair of my granny panties in the front hallway for all to see.

8. You always look amazing and put together, do you have a style tip that you swear by?

Aw shucks thank you!! My style tip would be to wear what you’re most comfortable in. And I also always dress according to the mood I’m in that day!

9. Do you have any favourite fashion bloggers? And if so, who?

Too many. I’m obsessed with Danielle Bernstein of WeWoreWhat, Sivan Ayla, and my good ol’ Canadian girl, Jillian Harris.

10. Are you a morning person, or night owl?

As hard as I might try to be a morning person, I will snooze my alarm a hundred times before I get out of bed. And even if I attempt to go to sleep early, I will stay up until 3 am watching tv, reading, thinking about life or online shopping. So I guess that makes me a night owl.

11. Where’s your favourite place in the world?

New York City. Hands down.

12. What’s your favourite song right now?

Capsize by Frenship OR Controlla by Drake :)

13. Favourite beauty product? Why?

Dog person for suuuure. My mom has two cats though and they’re pretty darn cute.

16. Dream vacation?

Bora Bora! Or Greece…or Italy…or Thailand…the list really could go on forever.

18. Running in the city or hiking a trail?

Hiking a trail! I love a good adventure.

19. What’s your favourite item that you own?

My favourite item that I own would have to be a dreamcatcher that my boyfriend handmade for me…or my Yeezy’s, ha!

20. If you could have any job in the world (other than working here, lol!) what would it be?

I would love to be a comedian. Or just Amy Schumer, is that an option?

20 Questions with Alisha

This week on the blog, we wanted to bring back "20 Questions". Q&A with Amber Pyper

Amber wearing our Amuse Society Teller Sweater

Photography by Robin Gartner

Last week the team held another photoshoot at the V.O.C. offices where we shot all of our new arrivals from PJ Salvage, John & Jenn, Amuse Society, Finders Keepers and more, including some special pieces from our favourite L.A. brands. Lucky for us, we were fortunate enough to work with another incredibly talented Toronto based model, Amber Pyper, who we think perfectly encompasses the V.O.C brand, and models our clothes equally as well!

With such a great reaction from our last Q&A with our previous model, we thought we’d give you another opportunity to get to know one of Toronto’s gorgeous and talented rising stars. You can also find her in the latest Simple Plan video: “I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed” - we love it!

Get to know more about Amber in our Q&A below:

Q: Where are you from? What inspired your move to Toronto?

A: I’m from Grand Prairie, Alberta. My background is Irish, Scottish, Ukrainian and Norwegian. I moved to Toronto to model and also because there is generally more opportunity for me here.

Q: Where’s your go to restaurant?

A: Anywhere on Ossington. Or 416 Snackbar.

Q: What’s your favourite food? Drink?

A: I love sushi. I also love steak. And favourite drink has to be water…i’m like a fish! Or whiskey. I love whiskey.

Q: Favourite sports team?

A: The Pittsburg Penguins. I love Fleury and Crosby. I had family friends in Alberta who were from Pittsburg and they loved the Penguins, so I grew up watching their games with them.

Q: What’s your favourite song right now?

A: Ocean Drive by Duke Dumont

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

A: Playing sports and going to concerts. I love Badminton, Tennis and Ping Pong (I have good hand-eye coordination). Alexis and I started playing tennis recently but obviously had to stop as the weather has cooled down. I also just saw The Weeknd in concert recently, and Shania Twain earlier this year.

Q: How would you describe your off-duty style?

A: I sort of dress like a boy, very tom-boy or athletic you could say. I love the “athleisure” trend because I’m literally always working out on my time off.

Q: Do you have any favourite pieces from this shoot so far?

A:  I love the [AG Legging in Shade] jeans you guys have had me wear. They’re amazing. I also love all of the John + Jenn sweaters

Q: What is the one beauty product you can’t leave the house without?

A: Eyebrow pencil. Anything to do with eyebrows. If I only do my eyebrows, I don’t need any other makeup. I think it’s so important.

Q: What is your favourite thing that you own?

A: I have a really nice faux-fur coat that I love. I also love anything in leather. So my leather jacket definitely tops that list as well.

Q: Describe the most fun shoot you’ve ever done, besides this one, of course! ;)

A: I did a shoot in Tokyo which was really fun.

Q:  Do you have any advice for girls or guys that are looking to enter the modelling industry someday?

A: I would say that they should definitely wait until they have graduated high school. And also to make sure it is something you really want to do. I would also highly recommend having another hobby or something that you love, otherwise modelling could consume you.

20 Questions With Our Owner, Emily

1. Where are you from?
Oakville, Ontario – but I’m a Torontonian for life (sorry Mom!).
2. What’s your favourite food? Drink?
Food: Tacos all day long.
Drink: If a Dark and Stormy is offered anywhere I have to have it. Union, my favourite restaurant makes the best version – hands down.

3. Where is your go to restaurant?
Union on Ossington! We used to live across the street from this spot. We’ve moved a bit further West but still go back whenever we can. It’s SO good.

 4. What is your favourite pastime?
Hanging out with my dog, Rupert, at the dog park.

5. Describe the best trip you’ve ever taken.
I backpacked by myself through India a few years ago. It was incredible. I can’t wait to go back.

6. Where’s your favourite place on earth?
Home!  My fiancé and I bought and renovated our first home this past year.  It's my favourite place ever.

7. Most embarrassing moment?
There are many. Most recently Rupert, my dog, ruined my sister in law’s gender reveal party for her baby. He stole a cupcake and covered himself and the rug in pink icing.   Surprise! She had a girl.

8. What’s your favourite song right now?
Justin Bieber, Sorry

 9. What is the one beauty product you can’t leave the house without?
Does water count?

10. You love to workout and stay healthy, what are your top tips for feeling your best/staying healthy?
I always work out in the morning. If you make it part of your daily routine it becomes a habit. Eventually your body starts to crave it. Crazy right?

11. What is your favourite sports team?
Blue Jays. Obviously!

12. Are you a morning person or night owl?
Morning person!  I'm up at 5am every day.

13. Beer, wine or cocktail?
All of the above!

14. Running in the city or hiking a trail?
Running in the city!  I live right near High Park.  I take advantage of it as much as possible!

15. East Coast or West Coast? and why?
West Coast! I LOVE LA. The West Coast vibe is so relaxed. The lifestyle is so healthy and it’s always sunny.  I would move in a heartbeat.  For now, I just travel there.

16. You used to be a blonde, do you think they have more fun? LOL.
Yes. I think so. Although life as a brunette is pretty great.

17. What’s your favourite piece of clothing or item that you own?
My AG Farrah Paradox Jeans. They are hands down the best jeans I have ever owned. I highly recommend.

18. What is your favourite brand?
Rails! I own over 20 of their shirts. It’s a bit excessive but I live in them.

19. Where did you get the idea to start V.O.C.?
I saw a need in the marketplace for affordable fashion with a boutique experience. Retailers are getting larger and less personal. Finding great clothing with personalized service is hard to find. We pride ourselves on providing this to our customers!

20. What advice would you give to girls looking to enter the fashion industry and/or start their own business someday?
Learn as much as you can. Expose yourself to everything. Don’t assume you will get your dream job right away. Every experience and opportunity will help you in your path. And of course… just do it.

Profile: Q&A With Our Model Alexis

Hi Everyone!

Happy last official day of summer!

With everything that has been going on over here at V.O.C., I don’t think Summer could have flown by any faster! But as sad as we are to see it go, we are so excited for all of the things that Fall has in store for us — including amazing new arrivals and some new brands, exciting ventures with our improved website, and the introduction of our lookbook!

With that said, we thought that for this blog we would highlight one of the amazing people we have been fortunate enough to work with on our website and lookbook: our model Alexis! We figured it’s only fair to give you the scoop on the face of our website, who rocks it on each photoshoot set and who we think highlights our clothes in the best way.

Here’s a look at the Q&A we did with Alexis, to give you guys a sneak peek on a few of the many awesome things to know about her! ...Plus, we're sharing a few behind-the-scenes shots from our latest shoot as well!

Q: Where is your hometown?

A: Okanagan, British Columbia

Q: What do you love about Toronto?

A: I’d have to say that it’s probably the diversity I see around the city.

Q: What is your go to restaurant?

A: LOCAL, a great restaurant in Liberty Village with an amazing patio. (Also located steps from V.O.C.!)

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I love to play basketball! But other than that I spend a lot of time walking around the city with my girlfriends. None of us own cars, so we use that as an excuse to explore the city by foot.

Q: What is the one beauty product you can’t leave the house without?

A: Chapstick, definitely! And I don’t usually wear a full face of make up everyday! So when I get my makeup done at a shoot, I love going out and showing it off.  I also try to pick up some makeup tips and tricks at shoots so that I can apply them before I go out at night.

Q: What are your favourite pieces from this shoot?

A: I love all of them, really! But I really like the cozy Free People sweaters, and the body-con Velvet dress - it’s so elegant!

Q: How would you describe your off-duty style?

A: I normally keep it casual and wear athletic wear when i’m not working.

Q: What is something interesting that you did this summer?

A: I visited the South of France for a photoshoot. While I was there I travelled to Saint-Tropez, Nice and Monaco. The photoshoot only lasted an hour, so I had the rest of my five days out there to explore.

*Special thanks to our photographers, Robin Gartner and Kate Watkinson, for getting such great shots of Alexis for our website! We couldn't be happier!
